Martha:
Your son will have a pretty good idea of when he should be arriving. And he will know if he's getting 2 weeks leave as soon as his ship comes in or if he has to wait 2 weeks before he can take his leave. Ask him about it. What ship is your son on?

I'm a professional Navy researcher......lol
I've never to been to Norfolk, but I driving over in March. Sailor son will be coming back from a long deployment. I'm staying at the Springhill Suites, about 4 miles from the base.
Someone else will jump on here and tell which Navy Lodge to stay at. If I were staying at the Navy Lodge, I pick the one in Norfolk.

this must be a stage that all of our children go thru kyle had been in the navy just over a year and it seems like every time he calls home he is either going to buy something new or someone made him mad at school or the officers are being to hard on him. in a lot of ways all of our kids are a like he ran around with a bunch of boys or young men that don't do nothing but drink and don't have a good job and i just keep encouraging him look what he has accomplished so far in his life. all we can do is pray and give each other support. hang in there ladies we can do this, but the funny part is they don't think about how much we miss them. in a years time my son has made 3rd class petty officer which is great.

Hi All: If you're interested in ideas for packages and how to ship to FPO addresses, join "Molly's ADOPT A SAILOR" group. You can also do a search on the net and find lists of ideas....
The post office has a "military kit", everything you need to ship a package, and all you do is call and it's delivered to your home. You can order up to 6 kits at a time, for a total of 36 boxes, labels, customs forms and a huge roll of tape. All for nothing!! (your tax dollars at work)

Boatswain's Mate (BM)

This enlistment program option enables men and women to eventually qualify for one of several Navy ratings (skill specialties) through on-the-job Seaman Apprenticeship training. The program also offers apprenticeship training in a rating that may not be available at the time of enlistment. After completion of recruit training, enlistees in the Seaman Apprenticeship Training Program attend a three-week course on basic theory in shipboard operations and evolution's. After successful completion of this training, Seamen are usually assigned to shipboard duties where the Navy needs them the most. Seamen can request and may receive on-the-job training in a rating that they are interested in, qualified for and is available at their first command by completing correspondence courses and personal advancement requirements. They must also be recommended by their commanding officer for the Navy rating they desire. Seamen may also attend Navy schools to learn about general damage control, shipboard fire fighting, preventive maintenance of special equipment, and the use of special tools used in the rating they are working in or seeking.

What They Do:

The duties performed by Seamen include: serving as helmsmen and lookouts; repairing, maintaining and stowing equipment in preparation for underway operations; working in non-engineering divisions of the ship or station; standing security watches while in port and under way; operating sound-powered telephone systems; doing temporary duty for 90-120 days with food services divisions or compartment cleaning; serving as a member of damage control, emergency and security alert teams; participating in naval ceremonies; taking part in underway replenishment (transferring supplies from ship to ship at sea), working with qualified personnel to gain job training and experience.

Just checking in--I'm no longer a Norfolk mom. My husband and I left this morning with our sailor after packing up his storage area and a lovely visit with Navy "Mom" John and Yvonne Wagner. Though we only saw one accident on I-95, the radio said 60-90 accidents this morning due to the slush. We got as far as Breezewood, PA, before dark and the snow really started. Andy was pulling a u-haul when his pickup threw out a brand new spark plug--like blew it out! So we hitched the trailer to our van (Dad having the forethought of having a hitch installed before we left home...just in case!), and limped the truck into Winchester, VA, where Andy bought and installed another spark plug. The weather doesn't sound good, so we may be here onger than planned, but eventually we'll get to Great Lakes and get him moved into his apartment.

We stayed at Little Creek Naval Lodge for $60 a night. Still a favorite place to stay while in the area!

So now I guess I'm a Great Lakes or Chicago mom...but I'll continue to check in here once in awhile.
