I'm on the Mississippi in Rock Island, IL, across from Davenport, IA. We're 18 degrees warmer than you at 9 above! The wind was unbelievable last night. I've got to go out today, so I hope I don't have that to contend with. As far as the boxes, make sure you get enough in one to make it weigh 5 pounds. If it doesn't weight that much, then you can send it cheaper in a brown box. Priority means it will get delivered to the Navy post office in 2-3 days, but no guarantee when it gets delivered to your sailor. Still, I sent many boxes with heavy things like cans of soup. And I always threw in a roll of soft toilet tissue! Take the cardboard out so it will smash down.

Anything you can stuff in one of the large priority mail boxes, no matter what weight, is $10.95 if mailed to an APO or FPO. My son also got cold when he was on the ship. He bought himself a big fuzzy blanket (not fleece, looks more like fake fur!) in one of the ports. He would wrap it around himself. That blanket went with him to Afghanistan, too. Don't cut one--he'll want the layers or be able to wrap.

Just reporting in about the tofu sailor. Today the phone call was about the best way to polish brass. You'd think the Navy would have that figured out! And we had a discussion about decorating his apartment when he gets to GL--they do still need their moms! Off topic--are any of you involved in HR? My daughter is thinking of getting a certificate in human resources management in hopes of getting a better job. She's a college grad in education, but chose the wrong major. Now she's thinking she should have gone into business. Any ideas? Sorry for being so off topic.

I learned to eat it with Diet Center! It doesn't taste like anything, but will take on flavors. He wasnt' going to eat it, I'm sure!

He was making his wonderful chili at John and Yvonne's in Virginia Beach. Someone was coming over, maybe their daughter, and she sent him to buy tofu. So he calls his mom 1000+ miles away to ask me about tofu.

God bless our sailors! They may be protecting our country, but they still need their mamas! Mine just called to ask me about buying tofu--mom, I've never seen it, never tasted it, what is it?

Just got the info--he says that only AT&T cards work and they have to have a $ amount on them, not units (if that makes sense). The yahoo won't work on ship, but if the sailor is in port with a computer center or has a laptop, he can sign up through yahoo for a phone number and put money on the account with a credit card. He used his yahoo number a lot when he was overseas. We heard from him almost everyday!

I'll ask my son today when I talk to him. I know when he was in Afghanistan and using his computer, he talked to us through a yahoo account for a penny a minute. When he was on ship, he said the cards they sold there were the ones specific for the phones in foreign ports like Dubai.

God bless John and Yvonne, here on Navy for Moms! They have taken our son in, and especially over the holidays, it is an extra blessing. They even sent us pictures of him in action in the kitchen making cookies on Christmas Eve. So as you remember to give thanks this Christmas, add a prayer for special people like the Wagners who care for our sailors.
