Hi all - my son just got orders to Norfolk. He'll be on the Truman. He graduates nuclear prototype on 1/23 & reports by 2/26. Looking forward to any tips you all can share! Oh and hubby & I are in SoCal ;-)

My son talks about going to Q80 too, I thinks that's the building #, Sea and Surf too (c9 is the fitness
Center). Pc's, xboxes and food court too. Comfy recliners in the movie theatre where he's taken a few naps in front of a screen, like home :)

casb8, according to my son, they have a movie theatre, bowling, something thats called a Q80.  I think the Q80 has games, pool tables, etc.. a place to hang out. My son has been there since Oct and hasn't left base because there is so much to do.  He spent the first few weeks just walking around. A little harder to do now in the winter i guess.

Forever proud - funny story about your son even though he probably didn't think so. ha  My son had a situation many months after he got his base room too.  Not as funny though.

He got up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and always tried to prop his bedroom door open so it wouldn't lock.  That night he had his window open and the breeze pulled his door closed while he was in the bathroom.  His room key, cell phone and everything was in his room.  He said he banged on his roomies door for a long time before he even heard him.  He called someone to come open it for him.  It took the person a few hours before he showed up so my son slept in a chair in his roommates room.  Once they got him into his room he had hardly had any sleep.  I think he had about an hour and then had to get up for work. I am sure he was grumpy that day. ha

Hello everyone! My son is new to Norfolk. He arrived on 12/22. His ship is deployed so he has to wait until he will be able to join it. His sponsor is deployed with the ship so there is no one to show him the ropes. What is there to do in your free time on base?

lawdy where my son is concerned there is a never ending supply of funny stories!
Towards the end of their deployment he was given the dreaded "cranking" duty which is by all accounts the nastiest assignment on the planet. When the ship pulled into port there was a mass exodus and no one thought to do anything with the pulper (which grinds up all the ship's refuse) until they all came back from shore leave - 2 WEEKS LATER. Imagine the horror. As he and several other crankers were bravely cleaning up the mess and trying not to throw themselves overboard at the smell, one of the chiefs walked by in the gangway just outside and after reeming them at their irresponsibility, had to have the ship's air evacuation turned on so no one would succumb to the toxic fumes!
Hysterically funny to hear my son tell it!
