Now I am upset. The Thanksgiving package I ordered for Chrissy didn't arrive on the base.

Happy Thanksgiving All -
will be with my son and daughter-in-law at the Lemoore NAS.
and yes he is hosting at his place with several sailors/marines that do not have family in the area. There is definately a sense of Navy family on each base and they come together for each other on the holidays.
Blessings to all.

Hi Terri,
I'm not sure how much leave your son will have earned by Christmas, and say that only because I know they're strongly discouraged from taking more leave than they've already earned. If he has the leave, my understanding is the guys can take either Christmas or New Year's to visit home. My son will be staying there (bummer for me!!!) because he wants to save his leave for a longer visit later on, and because of the challenges of flying out of the north east around the winter holidays. If you haven't found it already, there's a group for sub school. You'll find lots of moms with a wealth of information. There's also a Sub Moms group with great information about life after sub school (and you'll find our friend Bea there too!). Here are links to the groups:

I just want to say that the USO is wonderful. My son is still at Great Lakes and he spends a lot his free time there. I had no idea they did so much for the sailors.

Also, I wish all of my Navy Mom friends and theri families a blessed Thanksgiving.

Thank you Ginger. Hey, can you proof read for me on the calendar. Excel file. I wasn't thinking straight. I had just slipped in the family room. My body feels like someone has been tenderizing it with a mallet. Will probably hit the sack early.
WATER. BOTTLED WATER. Both SF and SJ USO need bottle water. Lots. The SJ has curbside drop off/pick up temp parking between Terminals A & C (next to Airport Operator). From now on, every time I go to SJ, I am taking a case of water to drop off.

A Happy Thanksgiving to all too.
Update on Thanksgiving dinner for sailors
LEMOORE: I posted a comment on the Lemoore page. The moms were very grateful but most just stay on base and hook up with sailors and cook themselves.
USO - three in Northern Calif
Travis AFB - the vets will pick anyone they know will be there and take them to the Vacaville Veteran's Association and take them back.
USO San Francisco - the director said the issue is logistics of getting the military person and back because they normally have their luggage, etc. Most want to stay close by. The facility is about 2300 sqft with microwave, refrigerator, freezer. Their wish list is for disposable products (paper plates, forks, spoons, etc) and individually wrapped food items that can be stored (power bars, Cup of Noodle, dried soups, nuts) except for fresh fruit.
USO San Jose The facility, just 1500 sqft is open from 8 am to 8 pm only. Again wish list is for same as above along with pop tarts, hand sanitizers, individually wrapped candy.

They don't get a actual number of how many will be going through, although the USO-SF director did say that they are expecting 90 on DEC 1. Vandekamp's (a bakery) donates fresh pastry every day. They also like Costco gift cards which the volunteers use to get the items. Blue Star moms (South Bay Chapter) also volunteers at the SJ USO. One volunteer said because of security reasons, our military personnel are not encourage to go with anyone unless it is by prior arrangement. Therefore, we should consider talking to the Commander at Moffett next year to find out if this would be a offering that some of the sailors (at Moffett - most are recruiteres) would appreciate.

We welcome two new members - NorCal Mom and csmwhite. If you are a new member, please post an introduction (omitting actual names of your sailor) about yourself and your sailor. Please note we have two events in December - on 6th and on the 12. See the list under Discussion Forum above.

Regards, Bea

Cindy, he is supposed to be on a sub in Groton, CT. Do you know how long A school is? I'm hoping we can visit this Christmas if he gets any leave.

Hi Terri,
Sounds like your son is a future submariner. My son's at the New London base in Groton, CT and I am hoping we're able to visit him there next year, probably when he graduates A school. He started sub school earlier this month and is really enjoying it there.
