We definitely have to plan something in advance next year for Fleet Week. Particularly if we knew a few of the sailors.

Cindy, the NEX that's on base in Great Lakes is o.k. but have your child take you to the NEX that's off base next to the Commonsary, it's on Green Bay Road, that one is really awesome! If you get onto Green Bay Road on Bucley (coming from base) it'll be on your left, you can't miss it, it's a Navy strip mall. You'll have to have your kid with you because the employees there will check ID. Take the Metra into Chicago, best way to go, and it's only $5.10 each way on Friday, but Sat/Sun pass is $5.00 for unlimited rides. Sears Tower is $14.95 per person, military free, Navy Pier, and the museum of Natural Science and Aquarium are free for military (although we didn't get to do those, ran out of time, but hear they are a must see) Have a wonderful PIR weekend! It'll fly by so quickly, at least it did for me, but I loved it. Hope this helps you a little.

Just back from SF. Had a great time, meet many young and wonderful sailors and officers of the USS Green Bay. The ship tour was awesome!!! Got to spend a little time with the flight deck crew at the BBQ sponsored by the SF and Oakland Police Department, Tons of food and music. Many of the sailors where heading off to the 49er fooltball game, some went golfing. some where shopping and a few where off to do laundry.

It was a little cool, but no rain. The air show went off as planned (they had cancel practice because of the low clouds. But they still thrilled the crowds.

The best thing of all I got to spend the day with my son!!! It was great to see him and just hang out and talk! His grandfather got to come with us and was so proud of him, you could tell everytime he was introduced to someone, that he got to tell them he was his grandfather.

As I left my son, I sent him back with 15 dozen cookies to share with the crew. I am sure they will go fast.

Thanks for letting me share.

Thanks everyone for your great PIR tips! The one thing that's important to my son is to get some good Chicago style pizza, so I have a good list of options that we can refer to. I'm getting the GPS programmed with important information (like the best pizza parlors) and preparing my shopping list for the NEX (tshirts, hats...) all the important things!

Hope everyone's having a wonderful weekend, look forward to hearing great stories about fleet week!

Hi Delores,
I just got home from picking-up my daughter at her school's homecoming dance and wanted to take one last look online. I'm so happy to see you'll make it! We're flying from Sacramento to Milwaukee, it was much cheaper than either Chicago airport. Since you have internet access, I'd recommend checking the online travel sites to see what deals you can find (travelocity, orbitz, etc.). One thing I do is use those sites to find the best deal, then go to the airline or hotel website and book directly with them. Another option is the MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) department. They can help with arrangements - their website is www.mwrtravelplus.com and phone number is 1-800-905-9330. The Navy Lodge might be a good place to stay, since it's really close to base. Woo hoo, just a few more days!

We didn't do much but hang out at PIR but B and some friends went to a Mall with a 5 story Macy's!! One thing I suggest is to buy your Navy Mom stuff at the NEX on base. It's really nice and cheaper too. I LOVE my sweatshirt.

Hi No Cal Moms,
Cindy for Pizza, we went to Giordano's in the suburb called Gurnee, it is not far from the base. There is a big mall in Gurnee, too. The pizza place is near the mall, in a shopping center called Buffalo Grove. It was very good Chicago stuffed pizza, and we had Tiramisu for dessert, it was great. Have fun!

Susan Kopp,
Linda Proud Mom (from Lincoln) just RSVP and is looking to join up and ride with you. Send you a pm as well.
The front door has been refinished. The remainder of the house will have to wait until we don't have any more college tuition to pay, hopefully in 3 years. Depending on how ambitious I get, the study door may have to stay closed during our M&G.
Naomi, Textures is the same as the old Vizions?
So looking forward to Oct 25.

Hi Delores,
I'm sorry you won't be able to make it next week and want to offer that I'd be happy to deliver whatever you'd like on Friday. I know you'll want to send more, but would be happy to help if you'd like to get a card to her after PIR -- just let me know if I can help.

My son's now down to his last week and our PIR group is doing a really funny "recon" mission trying to piece together the bits of information we've received to establish the battlestations schedule for all the divisions. It's pretty funny what we moms will do! It looks like my son's night is Tuesday and he's down to just "test 3" and battlestations. We're almost there and I cannot wait for next weekend! Thanks to everyone who has shared PIR tips and if anyone has any secrets they'd be willing to share, please do. The only thing my son's hooked on is finding the best Chicago style pizza, that and taking a shower that uses up all the hot water at the hotel.

I'm looking forward to future meet and greet actvities, and having my "Navy Mom" attire this time!
