Thanks everyone for the travel help. I booked with Southwest out of Midway, it was not cheap but at least I got something. I just hope there are no delays on those days!! We had a nightmare day on the way to Great Lakes for PIR in August!

Delores, I know you want her to have it as soon as possible, but unless you know for sure where her school will be you may want to wait a week to get her new address. Sometimes they don't move from BC until Wed. after PIR. Also, send it USPO and it will go right to her building and her room. With UPS they have to go and pick it up and sign for it and sometimes they can't get there immediately so it might sit for a while. Also, the PO wants you to use their boxes or they charge you more! She will LOVE getting the congratulation box(s)!!!

When we went to PIR we flew out of Sacramento to Milwaukee WI, drove 45 minutes down to GL, very easy route, and you don't have to fight Chicago traffic. We also saved over $150.00 round trip flying into Milwaukee, you may want to look into it. Safe travels to those going to PIR, congratulations and have a wonderful weekend with your sailor.

Patricia, that's so cool watching the Blue Angels. Do you live in bay area? We'd love to attend Fleet week but our trip to Great Lakes took a chunck out of the budget and won't be able to attend, planning for next year though. For those who go to Fleet week have fun and be sure to thank every sailor you see because many will be away from home and I know they'd appreciate the kind words and thought. God bless our sailors/recruits, God bless ALL Navy families

Tee - I am trying to do the same thing, only my sailor says he does not know for sure the dates. Do you know? That Weds before Thanksgiving is going to be expensive AND crowded! What have you found so far? I haven't even started looking.....

Does anyone have experience with getting your sailor airline tickets from Great Lakes to CAL for Thanksgiving? I'm trying to do it without going bankrupt!

Lynn please know that you and your family are in our prayers. This is a GREAT place to be - lots of support and wonderful sharing. I've learned so much. When I get the 'blues' and read what other's are doing it brighten's my whole outlook. I continue to be amazed. Keep reading.

Lynn....I hear you. I grew up in the Marine Corp, Married into the Air Force and have had my son in the Navy for 8 years and I have to say this last deployment was the hardest. I really stuggled with this last one.

Lynn.....Welcome to the group. Our son just got back from Afghanistan. Yes, you have heard right the communcaitons are difficult. It is alot different than Iraq where they have much more services e-mail and phone service.

It will depend on his assignment as to whether he has access to a computer or not?

If this is your first experience with your son being deployed here's one thing that you can do for yourself. Call the 1-800 number for the post office and order yourself a started packet for flat rate boxes. They will provide you with everything you need to mail packages overseas. It is free of charge.

One thing we use to do was save the calendar pages from like the Far Side and cut the date off. Then we would have something to send in letters when we didn't have lots to say.

Stay focused.

We are all here for you!

I am going to fleet week, this is the first chance I have had to see our son, since he cam back from Afghanistan.

When we have gone to Fleet Week in the past, ( we go almost every year) We have had to take our own things. The lawn area is huge and there is a lot of space to set up a picnic site. I don't suggest leaving anything of importance laying about if you intend to look at the sites. We take a picnic because foods and beverages there can be pricey. I like the lawn best, can see the Blue Angels perfectly when they fly over. Have fun!
