A school graduation?? - how big of a ceremony is it?? Do most parents go? When do they have a date? As of Friday, the 8th, he was 1/2 way through A school and doing well. Just need to know if I need to start thinking about time off work and travel arrangements. He has told me they will probably not get time off to come home after A school because the Christmas holidays will be right around the corner and he will get to come home 14 days then. Another question - how long will it be until he starts power school after A school. Thanks for any info. I am so excited when I come to this site and something new has been posted. Thanks for all the good info. Melody

Power School graduation is the big one. I don't remember 'A' School doing a public graduation for families. Power School is a huge deal...family, friends etc.

Time between 'A' and Power Schools depends on class schedules. It takes a couple of A school classes to make a full Power School. Your son may "T-Track" between 'A' and Power schools. Time may range from a week to as much as 6 weeks.

Tell your son good luck and thanks for his service.
Melody ...I went to my son's A school graduation. It was a long journey for him and I felt I just had to be there. It was a brief ceremony, out of 75 grads, max 10 families attended including me. I knew my son would have preferred me not being there but I had too.
I don't regret it and planning was critical with cost, rental and the weekend. It was a Friday am and then, I got a weekend with him! However, I have Power School Graduation coming up and I hear that is the big one....Can anyone share about this big one?
Thanks! Yvette
Yvette, Power School Grad is a big event. Not only do the enlisted Sailors graduate, but so do the Officers. The entire Command is present for it, including CAPT Bailey. They usually have a guest speaker such as ADM Donaldson, the head of the Nuclear Program in the Navy. It usually will be outside around the flagpole, if the weather is good and there are about 300 Officers and enlisted graduating at one time. It is a special event and many parents and families do attend. It also is on a Friday morning. Hope this helps.
I am boarding a plane in 4 hours to see my son graduate from A school in Goose Creek. I don't know much about it but my son is finishing #1 in his class with a grade point of 3.94 and has earned all 3 of the top honors of his class. We are naturally very excited that we are going and extraordinarily proud. Because of his performance at "Nuke" school, a few weeks ago he was offered appointment to the Naval Academy. My husband and I are on cloud nine.
That is fan-tabulous news!! Congratulations!!!!
I am so happy for you--Your going to have a nice week-end with your son. can you e-mail me back to tell me alittle about your activities when you got there. Did your son have the day off prior to grad.day? My Son Brandon is graduation is Dec. 19th 2008. Then he gets christmas time off. My son is having a hard time and studing all the time--but he says hes passing. I am worring about how they grade and score test...lol I am Praying for my son to be able to pass his test in the A-School--please say a prayer for my son Brandon---Thank You.... Your son is doing wonderful----But I worry about my son 24/7....lol Because this is a hard career. Thank You--For Listening--I am going to try to go to my son's grad. also---I can't wait...talk to you when you get back............Debby
Debby,
Sometimes we don't have all the answers. My son graduated from A school, two months till power school is over and well, he's out. It was an academic struggle and I could hear it in his voice. The battle is over...he wasn't cut out for this field. But hearing his voice, telling me #1 and how they moved him to DTP (Delayed Training Program) was very difficult. This happened one week and he told me the next week. I knew something was up for I rec a text from him during the week. Which normally there was no time for this and studying. This impacted his self esteem, confidence and could hear the pain. But something is out there for him. Now 2 weeks post this event, he is himself again. His spirit is back and he has other opportunities. But as a mother, I just wanted to take the pain away. He felt very down and I could do nothing to make it better. Powerless...Yes! Not Power School...
I didn't know what to do, so I called a female Ombudsmen and she was great. She explained the DTP and reasons why they move them out quickly. We discussed his options for the future and she was a world of help, encouragement, etc. Believe it or not, I found her on google. She explained that some just do not make it ....
I just wanted to put my arms around him and tell him, God has a better plan. By his success, this journey was not wasted, signing up for this incredible filed were lessons learned, follow your heart and do something you would enjoy. So I am not a Nuke Mom, anymore but I am mom of a great, sailor.
My son said it best " If it were easy, all would make it"
Pray for him, Yvette
Dear Yvette, Sorry that your son has had a setback in his Navy career. We are all proud of him for trying. He is still a great asset to his family and his country. Thank him for his service. Pat
Yvette - my son is about to become a Nuke - but hasn't even headed off to boot camp yet. I have had many concerns since this journey began and have found MANY answers to my questions here on this site. I commend you for this entry - as it is a concern, at least for me and probably other moms too. "What happens if my son isn't successful in the Nuke program." I'd love to know how your son is doing now, and how they went about transitioning him to something else. It's not that I don't have faith in my son, I do, but I am also a realist and know that not everyone is cut out for it. It would be nice to know more about how the Navy handles this type of situation.

I love how you close out your post - with such a positive outlook - and you are so very, very right -- Your son is a great sailor! and You're a great MOM! Thanks very much for sharing your son's story.
Caryn,
Your response made me feel so much better for posting this....if this was hard for me can you imagine the program. He has now entered into Navy Intelligence still an E4 and loving life. His A school will end in Feb and on with this new path and he's been home twice since October and he's happy. I told him it wasn't about the money and how you become later in life, it's the journey and are you happy? He honestly had no idea what he committed too during recruitment. And, I am sure that is how they weed out the ones that do make it. My prayers are with these sailors that have succeeded on the Nuke Journey, I commend them. But God had better plans for my sailor, each of us are different. He learned many acamedic skills that will follow him and he learned there are so many options with the Navy.
So when does your son head out to boot camp? Oh, that graduation day was the incredible, I do hope you can be there for his celebration. My prayers are with you as your son goes off to the Navy. It has been the hardest thing to let go....
Caryn, My love goes out to your son. Write him.....everyday! Thank him for doing this for our country...Many blessings, Yvette
Yvette,
Thank you so very much for sharing your son's story. My son won't leave for boot camp for another month and a half and he is worried already that he won't be able to finish Nuke training. I am so very relieved to know that there is another path to take if Nuke training doesn't work out. I am so very proud of your son. I know he is a great sailor.
Ginny

Yvette ... are you still connected?  I have some questions for you.  Thanks!
