My son finally had a meltdown last week about how much stuff he needed to get but either didn't have time for or he simply forgot. He requested that I post some of the things that all NUKE's need in A school. He said that a great idea would be to send them the day before graduation to the indoc address as it never changes. The address is:

                                         FN, first name, last name

                                         class: INDOC

                                         101 NNPTC Circle

                                          Goose Creek, SC 29445

This way all new sailors will have everything they need when they get their.

This is his list:

  •       -bowls/silverware
  •       -can opener
  •       -laundry det./dryer sheets
  •       -ironing board/iron
  •       -personal hyg. (body wash, cologne, deoderant, etc)
  •       -twin sheets (they are provided but my son tells me they "suck")
  •       -sneakers
  •       -black socks
  •       -white/blue t-shirts (to replace the ones from boot camp, again he says it's a quality issue)
  •       -something to do (books, video games, cards, etc.)

He also said that he has picked up extra's of Navy issued things and highly reccomends getting extra of the following as soon as you get to GC:

  •    -NSU cover (1 or 2)
  •    -dress whites cover
  •    -ribbons
  •    -pt gear (at least one more set, two would be better)

I hope this helps! Also veteran moms please add anything that you think would help.

Please note:  the FN just before the Name for the example above is not correct for all rates.  This is only the MM rate.  When they come out of bootcamp, the MM's are called Fireman (FN) until they graduate from A school, then they are called MM.  Be sure you get the correct info. for the other rates before sending mail.  Also, the class: Indoc changes to a class number once they start A school, so be sure to find out the correct class number to ensure mail is routed correctly.  The mail room hates having to try to find people when mail isn't addressed correctly.  After A school it will change to Class: t-track, then in Power school it will be another class number, then after power school it will be Class:  Grad. Hold (if they are staying in GC for grad hold).

I would also add a couple of things to the list.  a mattress pad and matress cover will help with their comfort.  Also, they cannot control the temperature in their rooms, it's on a central system, so at times it is cold or stuffy. An extra blanket helps, and a little fan for summer helps too for air circulation.  Also, a microwave safe dish with a cover on it, and maybe some ziploc bags to put leftovers in (like if they have pizza or bring something back from a restaurant.  the take home containers won't fit in their little fridge very well).  And a hot/cold travel mug is very useful so they can take it into class with them.

Sent my son his first package today.....tried to keep it simple since he said he can't have much stuff until he phases up....even still it weighed 17lbs and was $30 for UPS ground.  I think I will try to order some things online and have them shipped directly to him.....the rest he can buy himself at the nex!

nice to see u on this page...

My son gets plenty of goodies but if he requests something specificfrom home he pays. I started an account on USPS. I tell him how much it weighs, he goes on to the account and pays and then I go on, print out the mailing label and request a pickup. This has worked out well when he wants things like books.;-)

Thank you for all these suggestions!! My son is a BT now PIR 1/25/13, then he will be at Goose Creek. So Target and Subway are good suggestions for gift cards. Any other suggestions for gift cards of places within walking distance?

thanks!

Hi Moms!

Definitely a laptop.  The first thing they want to do is reconnect with their family and friends through FB or Skype.

Below are are a couple of additional items myson requested during his tenure at PowerSchool:

- Sour patches candy, freeze dried bananas, cranberries and nuts

- Sport watch that displayed military time and had the ability to track his run times during PT

- New Running Shoes for PT

- iPod and sweatproof ear phones for PT

- Civilian clothes (once he was able to leave base, i.e., jeans, t-shirts)

- Homemade cookies and candy from Mom/Grandmother

- XBox w/games

- Subway Gift card (Subway is a big hit there and is just a walk for the sailors from their barraks)

- Big coffee cup  :)

Hope this helps - wishing your son all the best in PowerSchool!

Thank you!! Everything helps a great deal! Sheets-- I saw where color didn't matter can they be the T- shirt material or would they need to be something crisper for a bed inspection? On a couple other posts are bugs a big problem at goose creek living on base?

We hunted all over for the t-shirt material sheets (they're my son's favorite), and only Wal Mart had them.  The Wal Mart near Northwoods mall even had the extra long ones they need to fit the longer beds.  He's had them on his bed since New Year's Day, as well as the quilt my aunt made for him, so I'm assuming they're OK.

I saw your post her a week or so ago.  I was impressed with the content.  I thought I saved the info to my computer... NOPE!  I have been frantically looking for the last few days.  I finally found you.  Thanks for the helpful information.  I am making a list and working to get things together for my daughter.  This is very helpful in that process.

What did people do before we had this grand social network to help one another out.

Future Nuke Mother.

Thank you Queenjailyle. Printed this off and will be sending to my SR who's still in rtc. That way all he has to do is fill in what he specific wants. All the suggestions are most Xcellent..Question: should I put his name on everything? Do they do their laundry indiv. are is it done in bulk?

Darsatm-To my knowledge you shouldn't have to put his name on stuff. I know my sailor has called several times while he has been doing his laundry so I do know they have to do it themselves. One of the many things they quickly need to learn to schedule in. ;-)

Are the laundry facilities quarter-pay? Just thinking quarters might be on the list...
