I am assembling a combination care package and birthday box to send to Patrick in A-school. I am sending girl scout cookies and a funny t-shirt (to wear on weekends). Also sending him some power bars and beef jerky because he doesn't always get to eat dinner because of study time. Someone suggested a lint roller because I've heard that comes in handy with the uniforms.
What are the rules about Over the counter medicaitons like Advil or Tylenol or allergy medicine. Can they have these items or do they have to go to medical if they have a headache or the trees are making them sneeze? I know its different from boot camp but not sure exactly what the rules are.

Care packages are always fun.
OTC meds are fine - the sailors are responsible for their health and well being (at least compared to RTC).
A lint roller is wonderful and a needle and thread for uniform emergencies (which usually occur the night before an inspection when all of the stores are closed).
Here are some ideas we found worked well for our son:
- A memory foam mattress topper. The bunks are terrible and actually led to our sailor having a bad back for a while.
- Brain food snacks: bear in mind they have a teeny tiny refrigerator and dry storage areas. Nuts, almonds and granola bars are always good.
- Gift cards to Best Buy: Many sailors pick up a laptop or a small compact TV for their rooms.
- Last I heard there's still only a Subway near by. So sending some Subway gift cards is always nice.
- A nice set of fluffy towels.
- A nice set of sheets.
Since we are firm believers that success at Nuke school equals a healthy mind, good sleep habits and continued exercise, we also sent our sailor a set of the P90X workout DVDs. PT is sporadic at best at Nuke School, and for the most part its up to the sailor to stay in shape.
Once your sailor has more freedom in the evenings and weekends, he may want to join an MMA or martial arts class. It's a great stress reliever, endorphin releaser and it really keeps the kids in shape.
Our son never did anything like MMA before joining the Navy (a book worm) but has since really come to enjoy Krav Maga. The class is off-base and also gives him a chance to get to know people other than those in the Navy.
Hope this helps!
This helps a ton....
Thank You so much...Honestly, I packed him treats...I sent him 1 bx of Mike and Ike, 1 pack of sour punch, I pack of gum his favorite, 1 small of pringles, 2 pak of mm's...and that's about it...My youngest said Mom that's junk food, welll...I just sent it anyways..I hope he shares and doesn't mind...., but now..I'm going to send him some of these ideas..My son and I don't talk much at all, but I will be sending him a mattress topper sheets and I nice set of fluffy towels...and snack bars...I'm so gratefull for your idea's..I just didn't know what to send him, but it's true what I sent him were nothing but junk foods...
We also included lots of beef jerkey & flavored sunflower seeds (the hotter the better!). My son is not a sweet eater so it was hard to come up with things. Once I ordered him a case of the Tiger Milk Bars & had them sent directly to him. That worked out nicely - and was convenient for those mornings when there wasn't time to hit the galley before class.
I never heard of Tiger Milk Bars, but that is a great idea for mornings when they are running late! Thanks.
They are a good nutrition bar - the only sweet thing my son would eat. He always liked the peanut butter & honey. You can order them by the case on Amazon & have them shipped directly to them....makes it a little easier ;-)
Sounds great, just bear in mind these are not normal length sheets. They are longer like dorm sheets.
