Hi, can anyone answer a question about A school for me?  I am wondering if  A school starts in October, will my son get anytime off around Christmas?

Oh no, my poor SR who is graduating on 9/20 and heading to Goose Creek for Nuke training will be so disappointed to hear he cannot come home for Christmas.  He is missing his friends terribly and told them he would be home for Christmas.  (His recruiter told him the school closed down for Christmas.  He didn't share the fact that the sailors could only travel within a 350 to 400 mile distance from the school.  We live in Wisconsin.)  This is not good news.  My husband and I will gladly go down to Goose Creek to visit him, but I know my SR would much rather return home to see his family and friends.

tinamev - yes the school is on "Holiday stand down" at Christmas and most will get to come home at some point in time.  I'm not sure of the specifics though..... My son had PIR on 12/21/12 and he arrived in Goose Creek after he had 10 days off (because of the Holiday stand down).  Mine will be graduating Power School on 12/13/13 and says he should have time off over the holidays.

I think the travel distance restrictions are more for liberty not leave - and once they "phase up" they can travel further distances.  For the 4th of July our son came home for 4 days and we are in California.  He was done with A school at that time and was on "T Track".  Your sailor could probably get a "chit" approved to come home......have him ask around about that.  I'm sure he could ask his SLPO how it works.

Don't worry too much about it right now.......your son will get more information the closer it gets!

hello mom!

my son went to goose greek in sept. 2011 and was in A school at Christmas time.  he was able to come home a few days before Christmas and I believe he had to report back the 3rd of January.  (im not sure exactly when he had to report back)    this past Christmas he was in power school and he got to come a for a week over Christmas.   they do close down the school for Christmas and new years.  I believe they send some home for Christmas, then send some home for new years.  this doesn't mean that your sailor will get the same time off because  I don't know if they changed things now.   your sailor will get more info the closer the season comes. good luck to him!!!!

thank you so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge, I don't know what us newbies would do without all of you!

your are quite welcomed!!!   we are a big happy family!!!
