I am planning on  buying my daughter a laptop for bc graduation. Does anyone know if there is are any particular features it should have ? I know my son is at art institute and had to get a special type to be able to run certain graphics and schematics. As they have to leave everything at school each day I'm thinking not. Then I picture physics equations and thinking maybe one she can "write" on or that can download some program to enable her to work on problems, kind of turn it into a big calculator ?

The laptop would be for recreational use only.  They do ALL of their work at school.  Even study hours are done at school.  Our son bought his laptop at the Best Buy in Goose Creek, it was mainly for gaming .  But now that he's on a sub, he loads tons of games and movies on it for when they are at sea.  FYI, the Best Buy near Goose Creek, is one of the highest performing stores in the chain, due to all the Nukes buying their new toys there.  lol  My son bought a TV there after a couple of weeks.  One thing to know though, is that the backpack that they put the laptop in has to be a certain kind or color, I don't remember which, but that can be bought at the NEX on base.  We were allowed to go in there at graduation and they have all kinds of things to purchase.  Just remember that their "down time" is extremely important, as important as the schooling.  It's pretty stressful there.  Most of the nukes have their x-box sent down immediately following graduation.  Another thing, they can't take anything with them back to base at Great Lakes after graduation.  So you have to hand off their phone, don't forget the charger, and laptop at the airport, they usually leave the day after PIR.

Thanks so much for this info from a New Nuke Navy mom! My son will PIR on 2/6 & there's still lots of unanswered questions! This helps!!!
Mine took his laptop & phone to GC. After a few weeks, he ordered parts & built a new machine (3rd time). We sent him some parts from an older one here at home (RAM and a sound card) and he ordered other parts and a small case and monitor from NewEgg. The women can and SHOULD learn to build their own. I am a girl geek myself! She will be in a "man's field" so treat her as a geek. :-)

I agree with Dan's Mom.  Since everything they do at the "Rickover" - their classroom - is classified material, your sailor could never load anything from class on the laptop.  No laptops in class either.  All of the study materials are very compartmentalized and monitored very closely.

If your daughter is like most kids, a gift card at Best Buy or for Amazon might be the best bet.  That way, she can purchase exactly what she would like.

It's also a good idea to get some input from those already out in the fleet, to know what is allowed and what is not, while on board.  The overall size (dimensions) of the laptop may be a consideration going from a BEQ at Goose Creek to a Carrier or to a Sub.

my advice would be to not buy the laptop ahead of time.  When you go up for graduation, there's a Best Buy close to base.  I told my son that was his gift and we took him there and let him pick it out himself.  I'm glad we did because the one my husband and were looking at was definitely not the one he wanted.  He was also do for an upgrade on his phone so when we went, he upgraded his phone, we bought the laptop and then all was right in his world!!  I believe you can also pick out the one she wants at the Best Buy in Chicago and then she can just pick it up at the one near base in Charleston.  One of my son's friends did that.  My son couldn't fit it in his seabag and I had to bring it home with me and then it cost me a fortune to ship it from home.  Just my ideas but you can take advantage of my stupid mistakes.

What is the best phone provider at goose creek Verizon or at&T QDOBA
C.
My son had Verizon - never really had a problem with reception when he was in GC. As is with any carrier though some areas get better reception than others.
My son is thinking about getting a contract with at&t at the airport before he flies to gc. I think a pay as you go would be better

This is such an awesome place of info.......thank you all for sharing

Thanks for the info. Our son had problems managing his "gaming" time before leaving for the Navy, so were not planning to send along his computer. Has anyone else had this issue?

My son too has gaming time issues !!  But, so far he is doing well @ "A" School ... I think they are really on them so no one gets behind ... for this I am GRATEFUL !!!
