Good idea to start this group. My son is an ET and graduated on 4/29 also. So far his job is picking up trash! LOL!

Just a discussion within NUKE MOMS.  I figure most moms will go to NUKE MOMS

first, and probably look for the class their son/dtr is in from there...My son is an ET, too Joann!  I'm not sure

what his job is right now...but I've enjoyed catching him to chat on fb!!!  I love these jobs they're learning to do...can I request that my son be put on "leaf raking detail" in the fall?  We've got 1/2 acre of leaves and I'm not sure he knows how to do that!  :)

   LOL

Hi Ladies, It funny I quess you can say im a veteran...  that makes me smile cause my son's pir was 12/17/10.

after being allowed to come home with us from BC for  the Holidays, he left NY on 12/26 and reported to base on 12/27.  Indoc lasted about 10 days and classed up on 01/10.  He is a MM, which lasts for 16 weeks, his graduation from A school was in April and he was again allowed to come home for another 10 days.  when he arrived back at base he was very lucky to class up,  and started Nuke school just last week.

A school was very challenging, he was on mandatory 15/2's studies,   in Navy speak means 15 hrs a week with atleast 2 hrs a night, and that was the minimum studys hours, after spending 8 hrs in class (10min break every hour).  He did very well, depending on his test scores (which usually on tuesdays) his study hours would change. but never less then the 15/2, Oh yeah I forgot to mention that time does not include home work hours, so really they can be back at the Rickover center 3 - 5 hrs a night.

The Navy will give them all the tools that they need, but its up to the Sailors to use them.  since the nature of thier studies are classified, nothing is allowed in or out of the Rickover Center.  S ended up with a final grad of 3.4  (out of 4) so hes was in a good place.  he did have classmate that were stuggling, but if the teachers see that you are applying yourself and get the extra help needed - they will really help them in the long run.

as far as our communication   we talked at night about  once a week, and try to skype once a week as well.  we both have a facebook page so that help for me to see what he's up to.  they are under enough pressure - so I tried not to add any undo stress to him, by asking him to call his mother :)...   and it has work, cause I do get my weekly phone calls.

There is no other branch in the US Military where a Recuit can become a Petty Officer (3rd Class) in a 3 month period, It was a very proud moment for all of us, seeing him dressed in his whites (for the first time) with his Eagle, Nuke Emblem and Strip - I was one proud navy mom!.

as for Nuke school its only been 8 days now, but I asked him the other night how it was going and his response was priceless " Very interesting topics,  its like a super in depth discovery channel show "     LOL.

I hope this help, just know the your child will be in for the challange of thier life, but remember if they werent capable of doing the work, they would have never been able to walk thru the doors.. I read once that the Naval Nuclear Program is like getting a drink of water from a fire hose.   based on what little my son was able to discuss with us, I can now say that statement is pretty true.

thank you, pmgcakes!

My son, like some others I have read about, never really had to work hard in High School.  How can someone take AP Calculus and never study (at least, at home????) and get a passing grade?

My son amazes me.  But I get the feeling his study habits are about to radically change.  I know BC helped with that.  I just hope it will continue and become a habit to work hard.

Thanks again.  I loved reading about your son.  Congrats to him and to you.  Sounds like you have the right balance for communicating!  :)  hugs,

Thanks, NF Mom!

I am glad that there aren't distractions during study time.  For anyone!  I see from the schedule posted under another discussion that they are in school from 0700 to 1550 with night instructors available from 1800 to 2100 Sunday thru Thursday, and that they can study from 1550 to 2400.

Thanks again for the information.  It's been great to have you guys respond and not have to wade through pages and pages of posts!  It sounds like the Navy does everything it can to ensure the success of our NUKES....

Vols are not 10/0. Vols are 0/0.

Sitting here on the couch with my MM honorman who is on leave and he says that vols are 0/0 and NOT 10/0.  And you have to be 3.6 or above to get vols.

Everybody starts on 15/2 and then after one test, if you are above 3.6 then you get to go to 10/0 and then after the next test, if you are still above 3.6 then you get 0/0.  Pretty much, you can be on vols starting after week two or three.

hey Penny!

thanks, and congrats to your honorman.  Enjoy having him home!  :)

Oh Swim, it is sooooo wonderful to have him home.  While his girlfriend is pretty much bunked down at our house for the weekend (and maybe for the next week) we don't mind because at least he's home.  Gonna be hard to say good bye again, but at least we are making wonderful memories until the next time.
Thanks, Swim.  We are surely enjoying him and his girlfriend across the dinner table from us every night.  It's quite nice and I don't mind the 2-for-1 deal either.

I would love to join your group.  My son, D, had PIR 4-29 and left 4-30 for Goose Creek.  Have talked to him and fb messages with him quite a bit since he's been there.  So nice to have more open communication!  Just mailed him some things he asked for yesterday.  Hoping I followed all the rules, he said there was no limit as to how much I could mail, but he was careful to only ask for what he thought he had room to store.  I'm sure I can learn a lot from you all!

RE: "The above description varies from descriptions posted by students and other moms in significant ways.  It also varies from my own son's reports in a couple of significant ways."

NF Mom - Im not surprised that it varies in significant way, as I was speaking about  My son's experience ONLY.

One would expect that all would have different experiences.

I just chose to share my story!
