Can anyone tell me the proper way to announce the PIR completion and school assignment of my sailor in our local community newspaper?

It has to be done through the Navy.  Supposedly the SR will fill out paperwork either at MEPS or bc, and once they have completed bc and it's verified, then the paper work is supposed to be sent to the local paper.  That is not what happened with my sailor.  I went down to my local paper and asked to put in an announcement, they said they couldn't do it unless some form was filled out.  I contacted my sailor, he was clueless as to what form I was talking about (they fill out so many, so I guess I can understand).  I contacted his recruiter, who sent the form to my sailor for his signature.  It was back in the recruiter's hands, and it never got done.  I never did see anything and I had people keeping an eye out for me too.  I would love to have announcement done with his graduation and next move, but I doubt the paper will let me.  I think they're missing out on some revenue!  Good luck to you!!

That's so funny that you posted this - I just called our local newspaper yesterday asking the same thing!  They told me that yes the Navy usually sends them a form but the lady I spoke to told me I was welcome to send in my own write up and if I included a picture they would print that too.  She told me to just look at some others that have printed and do the same thing......Of course the last one that our paper printed had nothing but Air Force - 10 of them!  So I'm not sure exactly what to put either..... My son also had PIR on 12/21 so there is still a chance that the Navy will send something - I'm sure it takes them some time to do.  If not then I will try to submit my own.  If you figure out how it is to be worded - please let me know!

That's too bad MichPad that they never printed your son's..... :(  It's nice to see our kids accomplishments recognized.....

Yes, I would like to have had something in print, but our paper was a stickler.  And I was quite frustrated and they could tell.  They said they just needed to make sure that it's legit and someone wasn't doing a phoney announcement.  Really?!  Now that you've brought it up, I might just contact them again and see if I can do an update.  Since then mine has finished nuke school, and is headed to officers school in Feb.

Do you have is official photo from bc?  I would use that and say something like "Mr.Mrs Jim Doe, proud parents of FN John Doe, are pleased to announce their son recently completed US Navy Bootcamp in Great Lakes, IL on 12/21/12.  List any accomplishments, duties, etc.  John is currently stationed in GC, SC at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command where he will be attending A school for the position of MM, Machinists Mate."

P.S.  Lucky your paper is laid back!

Thanks for the idea of how to word the announcement!  I do have his official photo from BC....I think I will wait a little longer (since he just had PIR on 12/21) and see if the paper prints it on their own.  If not then I am going to send it over myself.  The lady there said I could do it myself - we'll see if they actually allow me to!

Hopefully you can still get something updated for your sailor.....I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

thank you...sound great!!

I will keep this in mind. Our SR pir is 1/25/13

I also want to put something in our local paper, so this was a good reminder to check what their policy is.  About a week ago I went to the recruiter's office and it was locked.   So will stop there again.  My announce ment would be for the prototype graduation and orders to his ship.  I figured I would also still use the official photo from Boot Camp.
