My son is currently in Power School and is anticipating his graduation to be in June.  I have read some discussions that indicate an invitation to the graduation ceremony will be sent to us.  I am curious if there is a limit to the number of people that can attend Power School Graduation (like there was for PIR)?  Any suggestions on best places to stay?  What can we expect regarding any leave he may receive after graduation?  How long should we schedule to be there?  Basically, if you were to plan your trip all over again... what would you do?  We will be traveling from the West Coast.

It was held outdoors when we attended, and I bet your's will be too-given the time of year.  I don't recall any limits.  We stayed in Mt Pleasant at the Best Western (Patriot's Point).

Hi Karen -

I'm not here to advertise for a business - but Charleston is one of the destination choices for some of the Bass Pro Shop's vacations.  You might find a good deal on a high quality place to stay.

I didn't get to attend my Son's prototype grad - so I can't answer any of the other questions!  Hope it all works out for you!

Hi Karen. My son graduated today so I will answer some of your questions. I got his graduation announcement on Christmas Eve. What a present right? So they give ample notice. There was no limit to the number of guests as it's held outside in, what my son describes as, "a common area". That being said, we still had to give a list of names to get on to base. There are many hotels in the area. With a June graduation, you may be competing with visitors to Charelston and I believe there is also a college that is in the area so make sure you don't wait too long to get a place. When my Son finished A school I went down for a week so that I could really enjoy all the Southern Comforts. His leave will depend on what phase he gets moved in to. My son is now in Grad Hold so he stays in GC for a while. If you are on a budget, the Villas, I am told are a good place to stay. Info on them is here, somewhere. Deffinately reserve them early because there aren't many and they go quickly. That's the stuff that I am aware of. Good luck to your son. I hope you keep us posted on his journey.
Hi Karen- My son graduated Power school and we stayed at the Hampton Inn in Goose Creek. It's very nice and clean and only about 3-4 years old It's only about 10 minutes from the base. The graduation is held outdoors in the early morning so bring a jacket because it can be cool in the AM.The ceremony is quite impressive with about 300 grads and all the high-ranking officials. Even the mayor was there! After graduation my son had no restrictions so take some time to enjoy the sites of Charleston. It's a beautiful city and one weekend was not long enough for me so I went back again 6 months later and stayed for a week!
Congratulations to your son and enjoy your trip.
PS The earlier you arrive the better. We had to park on the side of the entrance road and didn't have very good seats. There was at least 1000 people there plus about 300 grads! Good luck on your journey.

Thanks for the discussion regarding this. I also have a son graduating in early June from Power School and we were wondering about the ceremony too. When do they find out about when they are able to get any leave time in Grad Hold. Does anybody know? We have another son graduating from high school and a grandparents 50th Anniversary party to plan within weeks of our son's graduation from Power School. Hectic, but many great things to celebrate! It makes it hard for this mom to plan though. :) Thanks for any input!

Hi Karen! We will be at the same graduation. Thank you for asking all the questions.  We are coming from Philadelphia and arrive Thursday, June 5th. As of now we are staying at the Hampton Inn in Summerville.  I found it difficult to find lodging, probably because of the season. I hope you planned to stay a bit.  Charleston is lovely and you should take advantage while you are on the East Coast.  Will your son be staying in Charleston for prototype? It is now about one month out, now, and my son hasn't mentioned how much leave he will have although his housemates are still in a holding pattern waiting to start prototype.  Have a safe trip and enjoy your stay!

Karen-

I will also be there June for the graduation. We have stayed at the Charleston Plaza Hotel, which was nice. We will be staying at the Hyatt Place this time. I am very picky about hotels, so I don't worry so much about the price as I do about the reviews. My son said you have to be careful about where you stay because some of the areas can be a bit seedy. I'm sure you have already booked someplace by now...
