If you have time for a little road trip check out Middleton Place, a beautiful plantation with lots of history and exhibits as well as a nice restaurant.  We enjoyed Vikery's restaurant in Shem Creek where you can eat overlooking the shrimp boats.  If you go for sweetgrass baskets you can get better deals on the Sweetgrass Highway which has stands set up on the sides.  Patriot Point was interesting and our son enjoyed showing us the diesel sub - hard to imagine living on that!

Thanks Beglish for that sightseeing info.   If it is raining hard, please avoid downtown Charleston as the roads flood.  I have been stuck around MUSC area several times.  As for the rest of downtown I am not sure....say around the Battery.  I do want to make another visit to Patriots Point and I agree that Middleton Place is very nice....not so "exciting" but peaceful especially in the Spring.  Besides my Sailor, I have a daughter and her husband who live between N. Charleston and Moncks Corner.   I actually like to visit "Guitar Center" in N. Charleston.

Thanks for the tips. We'll be heading there soon. My daughter is planning on taking us to Patriots Point.

There's also Magnolia Plantation which we toured.  Very beautiful with lots of history.  I also recommend Patriot's Point.  If they show up in uniform I believe they get in free (if i remember correctly).  Downtown has lots of history and many restaurants.  There's also carriage rides and ghost tours.

Hopefully others will chime in with more up to date places to visit.

that sweetgrass highway info is much appreciated. i know a lot of time goes into them but i can't afford the price in town.

Here's some links shared by J's/S'smom:

Patriot's Point, Home of the USS Yorktown:

From there, if it has re-opened, seeing Fort Sumter is worth the time (though it might be closed for repairs?). Here is the web page:

While you're at Patriot's Point, it's worth it to stop by and see the Hunley--absolutely amazing, especially if your sailor happens to be a submariner:

Patriots Point - still gives free admittance to military in uniform or $5 off with their Military ID. There is a $5.00 per day/ per vehicle parking charge. However, you can go there and park and take the boat from there to Ft. Sumter, and that parking is cheaper than the downtown garage parking - from my research so far.

Here is the link for the boat tours that take you to Ft. Sumter -  https://fortsumtertours.com/tours/fort-sumter-tour/  - currently they have an online special where you can do Ft. Sumter and get a pass to tour USS Yorktown for $39. The pass to the Yorktown is good for a couple of days as I understood them, but does not give any admission to the other sites at Patriots Point. They also give a $5 discount for military ID.

Be sure to go to the direct websites for places. I was trying to locate Cypress Gardens in Monck's Corner seeing it advertised in a tour guide, only to go to the website and find out they are currently closed due to flood damage.  How sad!!

Here's the link to Edisto Beach (Buzzbeck said her son visited here often):

bump

Thanks, B’snukemom, for bumping this to the top! So far I’ve done a carriage ride, did a little shopping on King Street, toured Ft Sumter and saw a little of the Yorktown. My next dilemma-Magnolia vs Boone plantation vs Middleton Place. Can only do one?? Suggestions?? And need restaurant ideas to accommodate 16 people. We are really having a hard time finding places to fit a large party. Making it extra difficult is the fact that my Nuke and friends can’t eat any earlier than 7 pm because of class and study hours.

We did Magnolia plantation and it was wonderful!  Not sure about the others but I'll bet they are equally good.
