So we're waiting to hear about the next class up for the ems and most are going to be going to ny.  Where do most of the boys live?  Saratoga springs?  Has anyone ever lived in albany?

Albany is pretty far.  Saratoga Springs area seems most popular from what I have heard, at least that is where my son's buddies live.

he found out!!  the list still hasnt come out yet, but the orders are in the computer systems!

My son rented a house with 3 others in Albany, he seemed to like it. He ended up living in Saratoga Springs with his GF the last couple of months. I visited both , Saratoga was quite nice. Albany was a bit dirty but as far as distance I think they are almost just as far.

My son shared a lease to a 5-bedroom private home right in  Ballston Spa with 4 other sailors.  They arranged the housing through the Navy while still in Goose Creek.  We visited there a few times it was a very nice house, pretty new and was also good sized.  The owner continually rents out the house to nuke students.

Roadwise, how are the roads in the winter?  Is driving a big problem with snow?

If my California boy can drive there, anyone can!

My son really wants to go to Ballston spa, since his GF is in Vermont and we are in PA.  He's got a bit to go, though since he is still in 'A' school.  He said he is watching out for potential roomates.  Any input as to good apartments, or advice would be appreciated, since we are already starting to research it.

My son  lived in Saratoga Springs this past winter and didn't seem to have a problem driving there.  My husband said the roads were winding and more narrow than where we live.  My son lived in a studio apartment that was fully furnished and included all linens, pots pans and dishes.  All utilities plus cable and internet were included in his rent for $530 a month so he though he got a great deal.  He really liked that part of New York.  He lived in a house that was made into studio apartments.  I guess the owner has 4 houses that he rents out to Nukes.

Hi there! Sounds like your son had a pretty good experience finding a place to live.  We might be moving there and I'm completely lost where to start. My nuke graduates Power school in August and we're waiting to see where he'll be placed.  Do you know the name of the owner or where I can find this type of set up for housing? This definitely sounds straight up our alley.  look forward to hear from you :)

My son is about to graduate from prototype.  Just passed his boards on Sunday -- yeah.  We were there a couple of weekends ago visiting.  Albany is about a 30 minute drive and they are doing construction on one bridge so there could be delays.  Your sailor will have different shifts -- one will start early in morning, one in afternoon and one at midnight.  These shifts last anywhere from 4 to 7 days long with one day off between and up to 4 days off.  My sailor often went in early to prepare for quizzes or his watch duty, so it's best if they don't have a long drive. This summer is the 150 Anniversary of the Saratoga Springs Horse Race so the town of Saratoga Springs is expecting bigger than normal attendance and traffic will probably be crazy through town,   The population of the town increases by about 10,000 during August.  One of my son's friends has to move out of her place immediately after graduation so they can triple the rent for summer.  My son lives in a 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo in Saratoga Springs that was fully furnished (even bedding and towels) and had snow removal to his front door.  He will be moving out in a couple of weeks.

When is your sailor moving up there?   I can ask mine for info on his place.

thanks for all the responses!  My bf actually ended up getting to stay in charleston, so that was a huge relief!!! :)  I will pass on the information to our friends going to ny though!  Any idea when we will start to receive bah?  He "moves" (he's already living with me) off base on may 10, but it will be nice to not have to pay rent anymore!

Anyone know how long the drive is from Goose Creek to Ballston Spa?  My sailor got the word that he has to report soon.
