Hi ladies, I'm new here. My husband is in boot camp right now--his PIR is February 18th so I will be in Charleston soon, yay!

I'm just wondering if anybody here did a DITY move to Charleston and if you made money or if you felt it was worth it.

We're looking at doing one of the "you pack, we drive" movers if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance!

DITY?? what is that means? my husband has been out boot camp since dec 3rd... but till now I'm still here at Washington State and he is stuck living in a barracks till he move me there in Goose Creek South Carolina... hopefully this month I can move and we don't even know what's the plan on moving me up there in Goose Creek... good luck to you and to me too on trying to move there in South Carolina
it basically means do it yourself and they pay you later. I would highly suggest you get "Married to the Military" to help you out. Good luck.
I'm already married to a nuke student... and he is already there in South Carolina right now...
I understand that but the book has a lot of info to help you a great deal since you were not familiar with that term.
I didn't do a DITY or Navy move yet we just did it ourselves because we were not married when he enlisted. But, I have heard rave reviews on getting paid back a good bit of cash over what people have spent on DITY  moves, even Army families have said the same. So I honestly plan on doing this when we get a change of duty station. I hope some others who actually have done it give you some more sound answers. But I've heard nothing but good things so far.
Also just remember to do a DITY move your sailor has to take the class and get approved and registered or they will not pay you back. A lot of people don't know that, so make sure you check into everything! Good luck.
according to my husband this first move the navy wont pay for it... but the next move... the navy should pay for it when we move to New York for his Prototype...
It should only apply if you were not married before he enlisted, then they will 100 percent not pay to move you until the next move. Otherwise they will pay for it.
And just FYI, prototype is not a guarantee for NY unless he requests to live there, if he volunteers to stay here in SC he will most likely get it bc no one wants to stay. That is how we are still here my husband is in prototype. They usually process married people out within a week out of the barracks they are overfull and want people out. You HAVE to move out after power school, they don't allow you to stay in. Your husband is not correct on somethings and he needs to talk to someone to assist the two of you.
Hi! Sorry this is months later, but I have a question. Do you know when they hold the classes? Because after boot my husband is flying out to Charleston to do the housing brief. Is that when they hold the classes or do they do it at boot? Thanks! :-)
When my son moved to Charleston we moved him with a rental truck.  He ended up making about $600 on the move

we did the dity move, and they gave us a little money upfront to get the moving truck and for gas and whatnot. but  we only got like 13 dollars after the move..(we didn't have a lot to move).  I don't remember my husband ever having to take a class or get registered. I know they have to take a moving briefing, then get the keys to the house, and then they get to go home and get the wife and kids (if there are kids).. which is usually on a Wednesday.  It took my husband about 3 weeks to come get me and our daughter because we were waiting on some paperwork to get to him. normally it doesn't take that long if everything is in order.  I was glad we did the dity move, it gave him a chance to see family and then we got to make the trip together as a family.

i have friends who did the "you pack, we drive" deal and they had to wait a day or two to get their things. also with the navy move it could take up to 2 weeks to get your things. So i would suggest packing it and moving your own stuff if you want your things as soon as you arrive here.

hope that helps
