are we allowed to see the eye doctor and dentist on base, or is it only for active duty (I have Tricare Prime if that makes a difference)? Also do they charge around the same as civilian dentists/eye doctors?

We like the DITY move bc I like to control where my belongings are. I've also heard from numerous people that it takes weeks to a month to get their stuff with a navy move. I guess the farther away you are, the longer it may take. When our friends from PA moved down here, they had an empty house for a month! if you have kids or anything, I would recommend just doin a DITY move. Also, if things get broken with a navy move, there's insurance that covers it. A lot of ppl recommend taking "valuables" with you though (just pack it up before they get there)

So, my husband is leaving for Goose Creek on Tuesday and we'll be moving soon. We were thinking about doing a Military move, but I've heard some really scary stuff (like valuable things going missing and lots getting broken) Is it really all that bad? Would you recommend DITY?

txnukemom- Haha last thing, mm a-school is 14 weeks. And nothing is too definite about hold times. My husband was told a similar story for hold before Power School, but was only on T-track for two months and only had like 48 hour notice before his start date (he was waiting on clearance). He is currently in Prototype and had a 4 month hold before that, and only because I had a our son the week he was supposed to start. The rumors about hold times have to do with the problems with the boat at prototype, and according to my hubbs, the boat will be fixed in a couple weeks, and everything will be normal after that. Shouldn't affect holds too much! Where prototype is is a different command than where a-school and power school are, and the two commands don't talk to each other much, so it's all just speculation.

Oh and leave.. It's like a big pot. You earn 2.5 days a month (including the two months of bootcamp). At christmas, they have something called stand down, and almost everything shuts down. He doesn't have to choose between post a-school leave and christmas leave. As long as you have the days for it, then you can take it. And even if you don't have the days for it, you can take it. His leave allotement would just go in the negatives, and then he would earn it back. (My husband help me write that.. so I'm pretty sure it's accurate.)

txnukemom- If there is a delay in Nuke school, it's typically because of an overflow of students. There is a new A-school class up every week. As far as the car situation goes, he will be able to get stickers no matter what phase he is on. And at the gate they only ask for a military id for entrance. So it wouldn't be a big deal to get his car there.

txnukemom--i'm pretty sure the leave after A school is mandatory..and it shouldn't take away from christmas leave.

Another quick question. Just spoke to my son, and he said it's called 'authorized leave' if he takes the two weeks after A school, and it'll take away from his Christmas leave. He said that he'd rather stand watch in September, rather than take it away from his Christmas leave. I'm sure he's right, but wanted once again to double check with you guys.

TxNukeMom--you can ask your son if he knows any married couples that live on base and ask if he can store his car there in their driveway. people do it all the time. don't forget, he'll still have to get base stickers once he's "allowed to drive" otherwise, he won't be able to take/park his car at school.
