My son is enjoying his 10 day leave. So far,the things that I have done with him are eating out, playing Wii along with his older brother, and all 3 of us going to a park, playing tennis, and going to the airport and watching planes take off and land.

Can you believe that a 23 yr. old (my Navy son) and his 25 yr. old brother were willing to be seen playing tennis with their mom?!  Ha, Ha! And none of us were that good! But we had fun, laughing and chasing tennis balls and spending time together!

When he goes back to Goose Creek, he'll got to something called DTP and hopefully, they will work with him to pick another rate.

philly_mamasota, I told my son that people are not thanking him for what he has done, but what he is doing, and what he may do, and is willing to do. Another way to look at it is that they are thanking the uniform and what it means to wear it.

My son is home for a 10 day leave. He was supposed to graduate power school yesterday, 6/6/14. But he did not pass. He took his last regular test and didn't pass that, so he did not take comps.

I am proud of him anyway for being able to enter the Nuke program. Hopefully, he will pick another rate and be happy in it. I am going to enjoy every drop of time I have with him. I know that it will pass in a blink of an eye. He, I, and his older brother ate supper out last night, and came home & played Wii together. We had a blast. It was priceless.

Just came back from CLASS1402 PS graduation. It was a wonderful ceremony, lots of families there. There were 12 people in our group. It was a bit cloudy and it drizzled for about 5 minutes. But still able to have the ceremony outside and it was wonderful. Families are encouraged to be loud when they call the sailors name. Lots of sailors graduating. After the ceremony everyone can tour the facilities and buy NNPTC souvenirs. Sailors are desperate to change and get out of Goose Creek. I know mine changed into shorts and boat shoes and ready to come home to Fl in a second. His very best friends were there so after a nice lunch in Charleston we headed back to FL. We stayed at the villas since early Wednesday, which I recommend to everyone. We've been in Charleston several times before but there's always something to do in that beautiful downtown. My sailor is staying in GC for prototype, and everyone else too. If you can go to Power School graduation, don't miss it. There's nothing like it. So proud of all our sailors.

WearsLargeHats your comment about "there's lots of waiting" in the Navy is so true! When my son graduated bootcamp, he had to get tested for his food allergy and that took about 2 weeks for the test and another 4 weeks for the results before he shipped out to Nuke School in Goose Creek! He just posted a picture of himself on Facebook and it's title "Waiting". He graduated yesterday and is on grad hold for what's next. NY or GA? He also posted on Facebook thanks to all who congratulated him but said he hasn't done anything yet. The real heroes are those who gave their lives on D-Day (which was yesterday, too!).

My son called me after graduation around 11:15 am and I was shocked! It was over that quick?!! Did they have a Navy band or did they play a recording? Played a recording! But they marched in, which is always exciting to see.  Love seeing all those uniforms. The "swamp wedding" couple were 2 classmates. He's from TX and she's from CA and they met at Nuke School. Will they get assigned to the same ship/sub? My son's girlfriend's brother is in the Coast Guard and he's in Alaska and his wife (also in the CG) is in the Bahamas!! I keep telling myself "the Navy owns him for the next 5 years" so I can't expect him to be around for special occasions or holidays. It is what it is!

That's funny - the reason I'm not going for graduation is because my son's good buddy is getting married the next day! They're leaving right after graduation for a bachelor party in another state that evening. As much as I want to be there for graduation, my son and I both agreed that it would be way better to have 3 days together next week than less than a day centered around graduation. It is a bummer to miss it though...hopefully we can go when they graduate from prototype! Maybe some photos will get posted online?

Hey kjzmsmom! My son is in the same class 1402 that's graduating tomorrow. I can't be there either and I'm so bummed but he said "I'm not high maintenance; it's OK". They went to a classmate's wedding today--wedding in the swamp, posted on Facebook.  This is the 2nd kid I've heard about getting married.
