Peetmom,
I don't think we can EVER prepare ourselves for this, no matter how informed we may be. I am on week 3 and it is getting better. I was fortunate enough to get her first call. Eased my mind quite a bit! she cried for the first few minutes, she told me it was becuase it was just really good to hear my voice. We had a great conversation after that, she said it was hard but not as bad as everyone told her it would be. And her exact words, "Mom, I've got this!" (I choked back tears on that one, lol) I immediately stepped into cheerleader mode (and I was never a cheerleader, lol) something about building her confidence, also eased my mind. So yes ... I PROMISE it gets better, and gets better everyday. Week one right after the scripted call from a very tired SR was like hell for me. Then when her division got a surprise early phone call home for doing so well, THAT was my saving grace to keep me going! I still have not received an actual letter from her. But I have sent one everyday since her recruiter gave me her address two days after her leaving. Come here often, that is what we are for ((BIG HUGS)) we can do this!!!
I feel ya Peetmom - I was never a crier - cried more in those first 2 weeks than I did for the entire 31 years I've been a Mom. It's a brand new experience & very emotion filled. Some people call it the roller coaster - a prefect description of the extreme highs and loes. Hang in there
Ok ladies - my son will be gone 4 weeks on Thurs - I PROMISE it gets a little better each week. I was a crying, non functional mess Week 1; missed the 1st phone call & almost died. KIB took 10 days - almost died. 1st letter was so sad- almost died. Found out he had his wisdom teeth pulled & I didn't hear about it till it was over - again almost died. Got the 2nd letter and he said "it's hard, but I got this". I''m determined to get to the end and thankful for what I've been taught @ home". He said Thank You for raising me "right" - so far one of the proudest moments I've had in his 21 years.FINALLY I am starting to feel better -I hope you will get to a place where the ache is not so sore & you find yourself able to think of him/her without silent tears. They are still your babies, there will always be a kind of empty spot, but they are safe, they are learning new things and they are growing up... I was even able to finally go in his room & strip the bed & pick up his clothes last Sunday without crying. Don't mean to ramble, just want you to know that it DOES get better, just give yourselves some time to adjust. Big Hug to all of you - you'll need those.
JAD when did you son/daughter leave, mine daughter left teusday the 15th just wondering how long until the letter and box arrive.
Help!! I ready all the comments and can't figure out all the acronyms....FYI Navy speak was no help. IE. SR means? Whew finally figured out that N4M is Navy for Moms.
He left this morning! Anyone know when they graduate?
