Thanks Gen,
I am glad you mentioned the singing card, I will make sure we send a quiet card, lol. I have a lot of family that want to attend graduation so I am sure we will make a special celebration for him after BC.

Tj;s Mom
Thanksgiving will a holiday for your son, like a Sunday, If he is a Senior Recruit at Christmas, he might be fostered out to an organization or family. Last year some othe Moms were able to be in G/L during the holiday and adopted several Sailors for dinner, etc.
When you send him a birthday, make sure it doesn't sing, the RDC's will make a very embarrassing deal for him. You won';t even be able to send him goodies for birthday, but at his PIR, celebrate all the missed holdiay's and his birthday.

My son leaves for BC Oct 27th and I am getting a bit bummed as the date nears. He will turn 19 Nov 22nd in bootcamp, then the next week will be Thanksgiving and depending on the timeline will probably spend Christmas there too. I really hope that he is able to stay focused on the task at hand and not miss home too much during these special times. He says it's no big deal, but for his last 18 years these Holidays were and ARE a big deal to our family. I don't show my dissappointment in front of him but WOW!!! This is gonna be tough!! Does Anyone know if Great Lakes does anything for the recruits during these holidays??

Welcome Proud Mom;
What a wonderful young man you raised to want to serve his country, joining the Navy was first in many mature decisions he has and will continue make. This time last year, we were all preparing for our sons to leave, so we completely understand how you are feeling, so when you need reassurance, a place to vent, or whoop and holler, we are here for you.
Please give your son a big hug for me, and tell him I said "thank you" for his service.

My son leaves for boot camp in 9 days. Did I teach him enough, to make it through this adventure? How is he going to handle this? I am worried. He has not had enough life experiences for this.

OK. I will take that into consideration. We are getting down to the wire here and one less thing to do (especially this!) would be helpful.

Kendrasue-Thanks so much. Good to know since he has NOT had them out. I had read about the molars but did not realize it was mandatory!! oops!! Called his dad tonight and he will (I think) get right on it. I am pretty sure I will be double checking.

Thanks to all of you!! I have learned so much over the past few months just reading everything on many of the sites that I thought would pertain to me. I keep texting him with questions and suggestions. He's like, "You're on N4M again, aren't you?" It's helping me to be informed and then I don't feel like he's just stepping into a huge void, it's nice to read the PIR stories and know that they come out the other end. Apparently in even better shape mentally and physically. It will be an interesting ride. :-)

NDmuggle--
When you're trying to cope, pop in here, we'll give you some ways that got us through. Surreal is an understatement, love him, hug him, start writing to him as soon as you get his address, number your letters, while you may feel like rocky, just remember that he is doing a wonderful thing for all us and our country Bootcamp will be an adventure and turn him into a wonderful young adult. One of my favorite coping methods, was a big bowl of vanilla ice cream with blackberry sauce.

kendrasue, thanks for the info. I tried it and still not working... I will have to ask my other son to help me. (muggle-what can I say, major Harry Potter fan. LOL)

I have found the group of Oct. 2010 moms which I think will be really helpful and will probably pop in here with questions. It still feels surrealistic and I don't think it will hit home until he is gone. Although he lives with his father right now and it won't impact my daily routine...I will know that he is GONE and I think that is going to be difficult to deal with.
