Hello Lori,
When our family went to GL last July for our daughter's PIR, we stayed in the Sleep Inn in Lake Bluff, which was right down the main road from the main gate. It provided a shuttle to and from the base for PIR so we didn't have to worry about driving, waiting in line to get inspected and parking. After PIR, the shuttle brought us and our daughter back to the hotel and then we got our vehicle and went wherever we wanted.
After battle stations, when the sailor gets his verbal orders they should have some idea if they are leaving right away or will be staying at GL for awhile. Unless they are going to be stationed at GL for school or such, then I know they have to go move their stuff out of the recruit barracks to another part of the base before they get any liberty. They may also have duty watches over the weekend so you have to work around that also. We got to spend all of Friday after PIR and Saturday morning with our daughter but then we had to leave. She had liberty for the rest of the weekend and went to Chicago with some BC buddies. It was hard leaving her!!!!
I'm including the address of the hotel we stayed at if you want to check them out - sorry I don't have a phone number:
Sleep Inn
3250 Bittersweet Ave
Lake Bluff, IL 60044

Dawn,
Welcome - sorry you won't be able to meet us for lunch Wednesday. Ladies this will be my last get together with you. I've lived in Mentor for 5 years while both daughters finished school and then moved down here to Stow while we got one of our daughters set up at the University of Akron. In two weeks my hubby and I will be moving to North Carolina. I'd like to stay in touch with the Ohio moms if that's ok!!

Myingst,
Your daughter's schedule and flight time might be different from the one we had, but any time you have to still spend with your daughter will be worth it. I just wanted to warn you that you could be doing a lot of sitting and waiting and to prepare for it!!!
Hope everything goes well - let us know, ok??

Myingst,
We went to MEPS with our daughter and I'm glad we did. We got to spend more time with her before she actually flew out of Cleveland Hopkins. We stayed at the same hotel as her that night but she had to stay in her own room. We had dinner together in the hotel dining room. The next morning she left with the other recruits early in the morning. We met up with her at MEPS later in the morning. For much of the time there we sat and talked and when she had to go off and do things we brought along reading material and just sat and read. The recruits are fed lunch but not the visitors. We got some chips and drinks from the snack machines. You could probably get something and take with you for your lunch. After the swearing in we sat around some more until they got all their papers and such and left by bus to the airport. We drove over to the airport and by the time we parked and walked in the terminal they were at the ticket counter checking in. (Make sure you know what airlines they are flying out on.) We stepped up to the ticket counter and got gate passes for my husband, her twin sister, and myself (you need to have picture IDs for everyone) and then we walked down to the gate and waited with her. She had just over an hour before her flight was to leave and that was when she got really nervous. Not about going to boot camp, just having to wait so long until time to board. I think she was more eager to go than I was to see her leave!!! Looking back I'm glad I had all that extra time with her instead of saying goodby to her the night before. She didn't leave until about 3:00 that afternoon so I was so glad I was there.

Dear Kim,
Remember - no last names of sailors on here. We need to always protect our country's servicemembers.
Welcome to the site! I'm from Stow and have a son in Dam Neck right now - going to IS C school.
