Thought you might find this a bit interesting, since it’s not something most of our new sailors get to do.

It seems my son is making himself useful while at THU. He’s been helping to train new RDCs! OK, that’s not quite as impressive as it first sounds, but it is important. He and some of the other sailors in THU are being used in training the new RDCs in doing inspections. The instructors plant “hits” on the “recruits” for the trainee RDCs to catch in inspections—things like ribbons messed up, uniforms askew, and so on. The funny thing is, the trainee RDCs are so anxious not to miss anything that they start marking as hits the tiniest things that aren’t intended to be hits, like a teeny, tiny hair on the recruit’s shoulder, or something like that. He said it’s kind of fun to fail an inspection without suffering any consequences. LOL

No word just yet when is going to Charleston. Oddly, the paperwork still shows him as not yet medically cleared (!?), so he’s working on getting that straightened out. The joys of bureaucracy.

Ruthann- so good to hear from you. Max is on week four of Hospital Corpsman, too. Same comments from him...lots of studying, etc. Glad you're feeling better. I'll watch for you on the A school site. Shed many tears with the loss of a Navy corpsman. His family is still in my prayers.

teachertoo, I am so glad you are going to see him. We are going to Pensacola on Friday. We will get to spend Saturday and Sunday and maybe a little while Monday morning before heading back. I can't wait. :)

Wow Michimom...Battlestations...I smiled and got tears in my eyes at the same time...it just seems like yesterday....but it was July 18th for my sailor....wow...I am just overcome with emotion for some reason. My son was in the same division as your sailor...I told him he was done and his response was "Sweet!"

Hello, Sistahs!

We got to spend the weekend with our new Sailor! So nice. And, something that would not have happened if he had had his original PIR date: we got to spend two days with him! He was supposed to be a Grad & Go, so we would only have had one day with him. A nice plus.

We picked him up around 9 a.m. Saturday after a little confusion as to which gate he would be at. We weren't clear where he would be, plus we didn't know the difference between NSTC (Naval Station Training Command, or N-stick) and RTC. Now we know.

Even though my son is not normally much of a shopper, he was fine with hanging out at the mall, and in the afternoon, we went to the movies, since we really had quite a bit of time with him and didn't begrudge spending a couple of hours not interacting. It's funny what moms will do for their sons: we saw The Expendables, a TOTAL GUY MOVIE. He, of course, really liked it, as did the sailors sitting behind us. My daughter and I gave it about a C-. Oodles of testosterone, and more explosions, shooting, knifing, fighting, etc. than I think I have ever seen in a movie. Still fun!

On Sunday, he had duty in the a.m., but liberty from 12:30-8:30. We went to the NEX at NSTC (bigger) and bought the obligatory Navy family items, and then we attempted to go to Navy Pier. What a mess! The Tall Ships were there (since we weren't sure before when he would finish, I couldn't remember which weekend they would be there). I don't think I have ever seen so many people per square inch, not even when we were at Disney World around Easter time years ago! We scrapped that idea and instead hung out along one of the beaches, which turned out to be a dog park/beach and thoroughly enjoyed the doggies runninng around on the beach. So fun to watch them. Our dogs would have loved it.

And, a cool thing happened as we dropped him off at the chapel Sunday night. We got out of the car to hug him goodbye, and heard men's voices doing a sing-song cadence. At first, our son didn't know what it was, then he looked at his watch, smiled, and said, "Oh, they're going to Battle Stations. And they are PUMPED!" Very stirring!

In all, we were gone from home almost 48 hours exactly. Left home around 3 a.m. Saturday, returned at 3 a.m. Monday a.m. Tiring, but I wouldn't have missed it for the world!

[Sorry this was so lengthy. Couldn't help myself. :) ]

Binker's Mom what a beautiful prayer. My heart breaks for the Swink family but yet I'm uplifted by the love and support we all have for each other. I'm grateful for our new found family.
