Thank you everyone! A navy mom received a call from her recruit and he told her they had changed his rate to OS and he would be going to A school in Pensacola for 22 weeks. She was confused because everything about OS indicated A school in Great Lakes and for around 12 weeks :)  All I had to go on for info was my son's contract which is GL for 12 weeks. She has decided that her son either got the rate OS wrong, or the A school info wrong :)   Understandable since he is in the thick of bootcamp, I'm sure it will all "shake out" by his PIR next week!

8 weeks sounds right . . . my son's leave after A-school was cut short (his decision) because his ship was leaving for a 7 month deployment and his chief "suggested" that it might be better that he left with them rather than catching up with them later. I haven't seen any solid info about a "formal" C-school . . . my son has been sent to several additional 1 or 2 week long training sessions since deployment ended.

I would have to double check dates but her pir was april 27 and finished a school late June
She then was able to come home almost 4 weeks before leaving for Japan

Oh and my son's PIR was 3/2/2012 and OS school finished 5/7/2012. And I know he waited about a week to get into a group for classes. So it wasn't 12 weeks.

It's my understanding that if it isn't in the contract it isn't guaranteed. My son loved OS school and loves doing OS work when he is actually doing it. His ship has been dry docked for a year and just now doing mini deployments.

jdmom, how did your son like OS school?  My son leaves for BC in Dec then he is off the A school for OS.  Although I did not see that mentioned on his contract he got from MEPS. He is very excited though, he cant wait to get started.

Lori...12 weeks sounds about right.  My son's PIR was in May and he was done A school in August.  In fact he is home for a visit and just confirmed 12 weeks.  Sometimes it seems longer because class may not start right away as they are waiting for a full class and if I recall they had them doing other things adjusting to the base and Navy also.  The time went really fast and I got to talk with him on a regular basis when he was in A school.

Question...A school for OS is 12 weeks, right? That is what is on my son's contract. I've seen where there is a possibility of further training in "C" school. But for the initial training at Great Lakes A school...is 12 weeks correct?

Mike's mom
Welcome. All is well with my os. She has no regrets over navy or job.
You will want to check out DEP and boot camps groups also.
