Cheryle-My son went to school for nursing and then decided he didn't want to do it anymore and got an Associates Degree.  He went into the Navy as an E3.  He is attending A-school in Great Lakes.  He is 22 TODAY!  He said he didn't get to choose his duty.  He was assigend to a vice admiral on the USS John Stennis in Washington State.  He wanted to be on a large ship but I don't think he would have chosen Washington.  Like you, I'm happy it's not Japan.

Hello ladies, Kathy you are being given great advise.  My son just finished A school the end of July and was an honor grad.  He also got his first choice of duty but he thought almost his whole class was able to get if not the port they wanted at least the type of ship they wanted.  He is now in San Diego.

Cheryle-How old is your son?  Did he enter the Navy out of high school?

To date, my son is at the top of his class.  He gets frustrated because the other sailors aren't motivated to do well and talk during class and it's hard for him to study.  Apparently the instructor (or whatever he is called) is hardly ever in the classroom.

  • Cheryle-What do you get when you receive a Blue Jacket award?  You must be very proud of him.

Cheryle-I'm new to all of this.  My son is in about his fourth week of A-school.  What does AZ stand for?  What is Blue Jacket?

Cheryle-I didn't know a sailor could change rates. Was he unhappy with his or how does that work?

My daughter is in her p-week of BC right now. Her rating is OS however. So I am brand new to all Navy life currently

@kathy-3/235 - my son was in 9/240.  He had to wait a week too and officially started A school on 8/8 and has moved to his permanent ship for A school.  He says he will be finished 10/4.

@mcmom - my son went through indoc for a week and then A school officially started the following week.  Apparently, they are in one building for indoc and then move once A school starts.

Hi, my son just graduated boot camp 8/12 and is at Great Lakes for A school.  Says he is going to be in one building for 2 weeks and then they will move him to another.  I don't know much about the OS A school - they have to wait for a class to start?

Hi Nancy - I just found this site.  My son graduated 7/29 and is at Great Lakes for A school.  Since the class was full, he is on hold for another week.  Did your son start A-school yet?  What division was your son in at boot camp?
