OS A School moved to Great Lakes last year shortly after my son graduated from boot camp. He had to wait for classing up almost 6 weeks while the school was moving from VA to GL.

He's on the Nimitz and for his cranking he's been assigned to security, so he went through all that training and LOVES it. The billit for security will be a year and that's ok since they're going in for repairs very soon and won't be much need for OS when they're not out on the water at all. It keeps him busy and he likes to keep busy. He's testing, today I believe, for OS3 so I'm saying my prayers for him! He's had fantastic evaluations and a PO that is very helpful in making sure he achieves what he wants. He's doing great So hard to believe that he's only graduated a year ago. God bless our sailors, and all Navy families.

Kathy, I went to A school in Great Lakes. I was originally told I'd be going to VA beach, but found out otherwise in week 3 of boot camp. OS A school is now permanently in Illinois, not Virginia.

GC, thanks for the questions...sometimes this group page doesn't get any comments so it's nice to see some activity. We may not always have the answers right away, I'm still learning as I go and it's only been a year for me. Thanksmom hit the nail right on the head though, when sailors have to do other work then what their rate is, they will appreciate their rate much more. My son, however, loves doing the security and I think his petty officer and command officers are doing what will benefit him in the long run, as the ship will be going into the yards soon for some much needed maintenance and repairs won't be much need for OS while under repairs. Things have a funny way of working, but it's the Navy and it all works in the end. Nice meeting you too! Have a great weekend!

Christian is SOOOO glad that he didn't have to crank with the galley on a carrier! He will be working with security for the next year. At least our kids have rate and aren't listed as "non disignated" who knows where they'd end up. Thanksmom, where have you been girl? Sounds like your miss is doing well. Master Christian is doing outstanding and is applying for STA 21....go to college and come back as an officer, that sounds good to me and dad!

I think my son will love being a OS , he still has a few weeks of bootcamp to go but he said he's ready for that part to be over (I BET LOL)....WOW Ann your son got 10 days after A school to come home ...wonder why they give them so much time off or in between, aren't they afraid they might get into things during that long off period ? What did your son do when he had those 10 days off ?

GC, it depends on his command and where he's assigned. I really don't understand it, but my son doesn't seem to mind. He's of the mind set the more he knows, the better he can serve the Navy.

GCMB-your son will move "across the street" in Great Lakes for A school, if you don't already know. My son enjoys his job but right now he's working security detail and is enjoying that also. My son is on a carrier and a lot of kids that are OS have been "re assigned" into other jobs, it's normal. It's good for the "newbies" to experience other jobs of the ship and that's what they do while being re assigned. It doesn't change their rate or rank, just gives them more experience and perhaps more appreciation for their rate.

Just had to share this with everyone... Larry the Cable Guy was on the USS Nimitz and my son got to show him what his job as OS is while he was on board.
