My son just arrived and is bummed out. He said they were moving in extra beds this week. I guess he should plan on being in the barracks until next summer. He becomes an E4 in a couple weeks.

He said he will get to take the test in Sept and then it takes a couple of months to find out. The sorta good news is that they are going to be handing out around 15 more housing letters to move out and he could be one of those. Keeping my fingers crossed. He already gets the food allowance but would love to move off base.

Thanks Clockard, that is good to know, he will be E4 in a few weeks so how long after that do they get promoted to E5?

So talked to my son and he is completely bummed out! They decided to put two to every room and now instead of being close to the top for moving out it will probably be more like a couple more years. On top of that, he is hoping for a decent roommate or life could become miserable. I don't think it would have been as bad if he was not at the top to move out. So those just getting there will probably be in the barracks the entire time at that base.

Debbie in MD - I guess us Texans don't mind the expense - we have to have those bathrooms CLOSE to where ever we are.....must be that iced tea & dr. peppers we're always drinking!  (joking - but not about the tea & dp!)

I do wish Cluck U would expand to the DFW metroplex.  I would eat there/pick up chicken there weekly!  My son did say there are several up there, but I think the one you saw is where we went - but since it was dark and it's been 5 years or so I make no promises!

My son was in Severn when he 1st got to Ft. Mead - he called it the slums of the area - I guess I expected less when we went to visit the 1st time.  I still don't understand why they don't put bathrooms on the 1st floors of apts/town houses up there!!! His 1st apt. off base & 1st townhome on base.....pain in the butt running up the stairs each time you need to 'go'!  It was hell on my mom (she was 69 at the time) but I understand they have a 1/2 bath in their new house.  Which they'll be leaving in August-which means housing opens up!!!

Clockard - sorry it took so long - the chicken place is "Cluck you".  There are apparently several locations.  I just wish they would open 1 or 2 in the Dallas area!  I would keep them in business.

northchannel:  My son said they were moved out of an old barracks about two weeks ago.  They moved into a much newer building on the same street.  He was happy the new building has doors that are not falling off their hinges, and a really nice day room.  He pretty much has the room to himself, as the two bunkmates stay off base w/ their spouse/gf most of the time.  Perhaps there is a little more barrack space with the move, or maybe losing the old barracks is why there is less room.

Just curious if your sailor is living off-base, which communities are they living in? Son will be going to meade next month and I understand that barricks are near 100 percent occupancy.
