Hey Georganna, congratulations to your son on his decision to enlist! I'm sure his big brother will be proud of him.

We didn't have a car either, but it is fairly easy, it's a city but not a huge one. The have tons of public transportation all around too.
Just be careful a lot of hotels charge extra to park a car in their lot. I'm pretty sure the Hale Koa doesn't don't know about Navy Lodge, but I bet it doesn't either.

Welcome Lily, I only stayed at the Navy Lodge in Great Lakes, but I I would think the one in Hawaii would be good.
I did walk by the Hale Koa Hotel which look beautiful and would defiantly want to stay there next time. Right on the beach and very centrally located. It is for all military branches. Here is the site to check out. http://www.halekoa.com/

Suspended service is better than international calling plan? I do get confused, I know one year we were in Mexico and added international calling while gone BUT we had to add it to our phone and any one that we wanted to call if I remember correctly and why oh why do I think I get a different answer for anyone that I talk to at the phone company?!!!!

Ombudsman is your connect to the ship Gloria, the ship will communicate to them and they will share that information with the families that are authorized to receive the details or communications. As stated go to your ship's website and generally the ombudsman's email is listed there BUT often they can not sign you up without authorization from the sailor.

I had my daughters phone on military suspension through ATT, and just had it reactivated when she got back to Hawaii. Then she just used a international calling card when she got to ports, or she could call from the ship. Of course subs are a little different. I don't think they have a phone on board. I have not been through a 6 month deployment with my son's sub as yet.
I got both my Ombudsman's from my sailors. Ask yours to find out. Or sometimes if you go to your sub/ship site on the internet the information will be there. It is usually the wife of a chief on board. Both of mine have been very helpful with information. They are mostly there for emergencies, if you need to get ahold of your sailor while on deployment, or just to find out information if you need it. If you get the e-mail address just write and introduce your self.

I have a question for anyone. How do we find out who our ombudsman will be for our son when he gets to Pearl. Also what does an ombudsman do for the family and sailor? Thanks for any info.

Can anyone with sailors that are on ships or subs tell me what you do for cell phone service? We have AT+T now and I just don't know what we do when the ship deploys...add international or stop service, hearing conflicting stories and I don't want no million dollar phone bills!!!

Have a great weekend all!

You could even try San Francisco, they were cheaper then San DIego. Not sure about LA. Also you could check into flights from Sacramento, I know a few airlines leave from there for the Islands. Hawaiian airlines is one.

That was my thought too Pat...LA to HI might offer better prices.

Christine...................I don't even know how to plan a trip to hawaii, I don't know his ship's schedule as of yet. They just returned on Monday from a six month trip but I don't know how soon the next one will be.

Daughter suggested we go at Christmas and decorate a palm tree, had to tell her ...don't know if your brother will be in port then and she said...your point is?!
