I was looking at airfare today. I found that I can save over $100.. by flying into Milwaukee instaed of O'hare. The drive is easy from the airport to Great Lakes. I did it last time, and no Chicago traffic. It is too early for me to make solid plans. I know of at least one mom who had a week delay in the PIR do to not passing the final run. I don't want to jinks it.

I'm going to book with the Navy Lodge. I stayed there last month or my other son's
PIR, and liked it. The rooms are $65.00 per night. It is reak easy to get to the base for PIR from there. Since it is a military hotel, the reservation has to be in your recruits name. All they ask is the name and rate. (E-1, or what ever your recruit is)

I got my form letter in the mail today! I knew my boys were different, but never knew how until today! Richard filled every space telling me what I need to do! He left me in charge of finishing the paper work to get his girlfriend her visa so she can move her from Brazil. He also said how much he loves it so far. He also said that he hated the first two days. I have hear that they are hard for the recruits. Everything is "Hurry up and Wait", plus they have not yet been assigned their ship and division so they have no place to sleep. Well, now he does. A space with 79 other men.
I went and bought a lot of the 49 cent hallmark cards. That way, I can send something each day.

There are 12 divisions in our group! I started to cry knowing that we are on the list.

No contact, as a mom, I think is the hardest thing!!!!!!!! I remember when I got my first call from Laurnce. It was two weeks before PIR, and I was in a training session at school. I saw that I had a call from area code 847. I answered and heard nothing. SILENCE! I tried to call, but the same thing, silence. I could tell that there was someone on the other end, but no sound. I wanted to just sit and cry! My first chance to hear his voice, and nothing. I went back and drew a picture and told him how sad I was. He also wrote and told me that he could here me, but I couldn't hear him.
I did get to talk to him one time before I got the "I'm a Sailor" call.
The only thing I can say, is hang in there. PIR seems so far away, but just think of what it will be like when you get to throw your arms around your new sailor!

Be careful sending cards that make sound! The RDCs do not like them, and some have been know to give the division ITs for a recruit opening them. (IT Intense Training)
I would just send a nice card with a gift card enclosed. Also keep in mind that any pictures you send, have to be seen by the RDCs as well. My son asked that I not send pictures. I asked him later why, and he said that the RDCs raged him about his hair being so long in the pictures. Before he left for Great Lakes, his hair was to the middle of his back.

Kathy, my younger son is the same. I call him the "Friendly Giant" He wrote "P-days suck, tell Vic she's a dork" (his sister)
That was it. He has always been the one of few words.
I'm waiting for the form letter from my older son. he has always been the talker, so I'm looking forward to seeing what he writes.
I haven't made my reservations, but I plan to stay at the Navy Lodge.
As for the first letter, when you open it, have a box of tissue and sit down when you read it. My first letter, my tall, 6'2" baby said he missed us and cried at night. It tore my heart out. I wanted to write and tell him I was on my way, but I knew I couldn't. When you get the letter saying that they are homesick, keep in mind, they are, but the letters get better. Always keep your letters up beat. They need the words of encouragement from home. Never let them "see" you cry.
PIR starts at 0900 and ends at 1030. Even though it may start at nine, get there early! The seats are the stadium bleacher seating.

Mary Kelly, wear waterproof or none. I was so proud and teary eyed when my younger son had his PIR! I would also plan to get there early. The seats fill up fast! I was able to sit on the main floor, but I noticed a lot of people sitting on the upper deck. At 10:35 AM, when Liberty Call is said, it is a free for all going to the floor!
As what to wear: dress comfortable, yet nice. Our sailors will be in their Dress Blues.

Mary Kelly, Thank you for the link for the gift card. I was wanting to send a card, but I think the NEX card would be better. I know there is one on the RTC side of Great Lakes, but I don't know if the recruits are limited as to what they can buy. I know they have a lot of personal care items, but the other NEX on the other side is more like a mall. I think my other son spends his whole paycheck there. Oh the joys of being 18 with no bills and a paycheck! lol

I talked to my younger son today. He said the same thing about getting letters. They hold them for about a week or so. I asked what I should say in the letters and he said the same things I wrote him. Write about the things going on at home. I would always write about teh stupid things, like what the dogs did, or what his sister did at school. I would also tell him things my kids at school did.
Just remember to stay positive. Always say how proud you are.
One other thing that was mentioned earlier: If you don't want the RDCs to know, don't post it! They DO read this site!!!!! My son always said he was writing under a red light. I never mentioned it here. I knew he was either on night watch, or after lights out.
Also, don't send food. My son told me that one of the recruits in his division received cookies and the RDCs ate them.
One more bit of info: The "Meet and Greet" at the Ramada is for all family members, not just guests of the hotel. It is nice. The drinks are $2.50 each if you are not a guest, but there is no charge for the receiption. It is worth attending.
