OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

jcmmmc:  ellen doesn't have a SR...she has a sailor!  She is one of the N4Moms veterans on here to help...and she created this group!  I think you thought she had a SR because she copy/pasted Jenn's message, but Jenn's name didn't post on it.

Comment by diannep on January 20, 2014 at 9:41pm

Jenn:  Please click on the "x" in your post with BStations date and delete!  I can't do it...only you or ellen can.  Thanks!

Comment by diannep on January 20, 2014 at 9:40pm

Jenn, I had to do the same thing as ellen (below) did because you disclosed a BattleStations date again!  Sorry!  I just deleted that part.

Div 079.... Not sure why but some of my mag is gone

Sorry to make anyone jealous.... I was just really happy and wanted to share the info that he told me. I thought everyone would like to know

Jenn:  ellen took your original post, copied/pasted it into another post (which comes under her name), but unfortunately your name didn't appear below hers which is normally what happens.  At the bottom of her post, you will see that she put OPSEC which means you must have disclosed info in there that is not allowed...like maybe a BattleStations date?  No problem.  Whenever ellen sees this, she will delete the original post with the date and do what she did below.

Jenn, We are not allowed to post BS dates. Admin fixed your last post.

jcmmmc:  So very sorry about the sad news for your SR.  Yes, you have a right to be concerned about him finding out through the internet.  Is there anyway you can check his FB page and see if anyone has posted about this on his page?  Many of the new sailors get internet time after they become sailors, while waiting for the phones.

I agree with Christina.  Only you know your son...and hopefully in your heart, you will feel what you should do.  You can always call the Red Cross (info should be in your form letter) and let them reach a Chaplain for you that maybe you can talk to about this.  Otherwise, you may want to wait and share this news after PIR.  I will keep you in my prayers...that you will know what to do.

jcmmmc, I think at this point I would not say anything until you see him at PIR. But you know your son best and how he might handle the news.

Hi all, I asked on chat for some advice on when to tell my SR bad news, (about a friend) but that was about a week ago and they were helpful HOWEVER, now
Sunday has passed with no phone call and as all of us know here....PIR IS SO CLOSE!! Any phone call we get now will be a happy one!! How can I possibly tell him now??!! It breaks my heart to give him the news knowing he will be sad and unable to be here to express his feeling with his friends and with the family. I have been thinking about this and am so concerned that he will learn of this of they get some internet privileges close to PIR. What a horrible way to find out bad news. I am just feeling bad about this situation...just sad for all involved. I understand that since it isnot a family situation it does not qualify for an emergency contact. I am wondering how to deal with this with our SR when this should be a happy time. By the way all...I have checked in thru my phone email so much and feel I know you all so well. I wish I had time to comment more but have been a bit tied up changing jobs. I can't wait to meet all you wonderful people at PIR....THIS is a great group!!

I said I am jealous but I'm not actually really jealous. Just a figure of speech. I love the information, even if it is a different Div. It at least gives us an idea of what is happening. :-)
