OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

I have a question....when my SR enlisted I believe he used our family Email address on his paperwork. We just received an email saying that the profile for our SR has been changed. Listed below that was an email address to contact the help desk at NETC. Does anyone know if this means anything? I obviously won't contact them, because it's my sons deal, but just curious....

I know it is hard, it was and sometimes is still very hard for me. Most of them do get to come home for 10 days to 2 weeks when they finish A-school. They also build up I believe 2.5 days a month for leave. I can tell you it can be very different for one Sailor than another but some of them get to come home to visit a lot more than you would expect. I will also say for my family these 4 hears have flown by and I can't believe my daughter left for boot camp almost 4 years ago. The only thing we can really do is take it one day at time, after boot camp take advantage of every second you get to talk, facetime, or skype with them and look forward to the days they are on leave and get to come home. Save your pennies so you can visit them, that helped me a lot. And find something to help you stay busy so the time will pass even faster. A new hobby, volunteer at a school, they always need people to help kids with reading or math, volunteer at a food bank or shelter, habitat for humanity. There are so many things you can do. I wish there was some kind of magic I could provide to make it a little easier. {{{{{HUGS}}}}}

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, survivors and families of today's helicopter crash.

Christina and Bubbajoesmom, I feel for both of you. I was lucky enough to have my oldest home from college 4 days after my baby left for BC. He left going back this past Sunday.  Luckily my classes started by up yesterday and I have some courses that will definitely keep me busy.  It isn't the same though with the empty house, but at least I can keep in touch with my oldest.  I'm torn between wanting a call from my SR and not wanting a call because I worry that it could be the call saying his PIR date has changed and I am so ready to see him.  My oldest was always the more independent of the two of them.  My baby always needed his dad or myself to be there for most everything and now he sounds so grown up.

Christie, I'm sorry it is so hard for you and I agree, it is hard to keep saying no news is good news when you know that the time with your son will be very limited due to his service. I just try to keep in mind that this is what my son wanted.  It is what he chose to do to help get him ahead, and at least I do know that he isn't getting in trouble like several of his friends.

Christie and Bubbajoesmom, I work with Counselors and Social Workers and I think they have been the ONLY way that I am able to manage and they don't say those ignorant things to me like 'they will be home soon, etc'. Anyone else that I talk to, they just make me more upset.
Bubbajoesmom, I cope by working 8-5, Monday thru Friday and then cook dinner, work out and write a letter every night for my SR. I have my husband of course to go through it with me. There have been a few nights where I sleep in his bed, sounds silly but it's comforting.

So good to hear I am not alone in being frustrated by what people say! I know they mean well, but they just have no idea. And some days I am not always successful at containing my frustration! My heart reaches out to all you wonderful Navy Moms for being so supportive and you are all so strong! Thank you for being here!

Christina:  They can't keep the uniforms because they never became sailors.

Your sailors will get to come home between schooling and duty station.

Comment by Christie_Okie on January 8, 2014 at 7:57pm

Most people just make me mad. They have no idea what it is like. To my understanding they will not get to come home after schooling before they are stationed somewhere. Who knows how long that will be? It would be a year from now or 6 months or who the heck even knows! And if I hear they will call you if something is wrong. Wrong according to who? Not to me! They think they will call me?!?!?! They will only call when I really don't want hear what they have to say.
