OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

I am reading your comments and it is so nice to hear people that understand!  Our loved ones are unreachable and cut off from their support systems! They are alone and we can't help them or even know how they are coping!

I agree with DomsMom. Hearing the pride and sense of accomplishment in his voice and letters has been amazing. He has always sounded determined and quite excited, I hope that continues.

I hear you all and feel you all...I want to tell everyone I am letting go I know he's a man but I am the mom and its the voice and the letters that tell is what we want to know how they are really doing!!! I even called my.mom and apologized for not calling her like I should have for the past 40 years and I live in the same town!

I have one in college and one in BC.  They aren't the same.  I have been texting back and forth with my oldest in college all day.  I just have to pray that all goes as well so I can see my youngest on the 31st of this month.

The only thiing that has keep me from really screaming is I know they are trying to help. They just don't know it really isn't helping.

mine too maricpcctx, mine was in college for two years. It didn't even compare to when she went to boot camp. No one understands unless they have been through it. Navy Moms understand, hugs to you all <3

Christiemom - The same son who is currently in BC, also went away to college. And you are 100% correct. It is not the same.  The only thing that the 2 have in common is that the child is not living at home. And that is where it ends, IMO.  When my son was away at college, I could call or text him daily. I was always in the loop. Now, we are waiting for that weekly phone call. Checking the mail for a letter. I think people are trying to make you feel better about your son being away. And not doing a good job. haha That's why I think this site is so great. I can talk to moms who are going through the same thing I am.
