OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

StaceyC...some of us on a seperate FB groups are trying to figure out what  Ship's Staff is.  What did your son say his new job entailed?  We cannot find that term documented and are curious what the job involves.  Thanks

My son got to call. He said his bunk mate last name starts with an "A". I know the whole name but will not post it public. If you son has a last name that starts "A" message me and we can see if it is him. He sounded so much more relaxed this week. AWESOME!

Stacey C, what ship and division is your son on? My son is ship 2 div 912 and he is ship staff/honor guard.

Just received a call from my son ship 13 div 080. He is doing great! Said his assignment is ARock - does anyone know what that means?

We just a call from my son, he said boot is going well. He got a new job that he loves called Ships Staff. If he keeps the job through boot he will graduate with level 3 liberty at A school. He seemed very happy but rushed we only three minutes to talk. He misses everyone and won't be able to call again until after Christmas.

I agree my daughter is in ship 09 div 075 and the first phone call I got she was so upset, but today's phone call was much better still some tears but she sounded a little more settled today. She said they wrote letters but they wont mail them until Monday..

What is it with these Ship 09 Div 076 and 075 having such a hard time? It is breaking my heart to hear him upset and down. I was not prepared for this either and I'm thinking he is realizing that it is not as emotionally easy as he thought it would be.
Comment by MommaT on December 21, 2013 at 9:30pm

Got a 45 minute call from my SR and not sure how to feel....how do we/they know when their sadness is just homesick or genuine regret/pain for thinking they made a huge mistake in chiding this career? I couldn't get him "pumped", no matter what I said. I want my child to be happy and this is breaking my heart. And to top things off, he has a medical issue they are seeing him for so if they decide to "let him go", he will without a fight while feeling this upset. This is an emotional rollercoaster I just wasn't prepared for. I'm praying for God to guide him in the right direction. So conflicted right now...

Yes, they are getting mail and he also said he sent letters out and was surprised when I told him that we hadn't received them yet.
