~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

One thing I"m not sure you all know is this:  If your sailor had problems with the PFA during bootcamp, encourage them to work hard to stay in shape.  They will still have PT during A School and still be tested.  This continues when they are at their duty station too.  Twice a year they are given the PFA and they must pass it.  So they need to work hard to stay in shape!

They do get to leave base at times since they have now phased up and graduated.  But they do have some structure for them when they are on "hold".  It is not just a "free for all."

As far as the "jobs" they are assigned while on "hold," my son got to choose between a couple of jobs around the base.  So it is possible that they could get one that is cleaning things.  They just want to try and keep them busy.  Try not to worry about it.  They just do it!

Thanks diannep for the info my son needs to be constantly busy omg he will go crazy can he use a laptop and all that and can he leave base to go in town or is he stuck there like bootcamp with pt and cleaning and all that stuff

Comment by diannep on February 18, 2013 at 9:15am

indoc=indoctrination.  Whenever they arrive at a new base, they go through this.  It is like an "orientation" to the new base.

When they are on hold, they are just doing their routine daily "stuff" but it is way too much down time for many.  One of my son's friends who was in Pensacola actually took over other sailors' "watches" for money...just to be more busy!  :-) This sailor was held for about 3 mos before he classed up in Pensacola back in 2009.

Yes, the class time itself may be 21 weeks, but the length of time there is longer.  If their classes are "self paced" then the length of their school can vary.

Yes, he should get leave after he completes A School.  However, he may graduate and still have to be on "hold" for a while during the time written orders are being prepared.  That is frustrating to them because they are anxious for their leave!

As far as "time in the service", GI Billbenefits (after discharge) are determined by when they start "active duty."  Which means the date they report to their first duty station.  Not a problem for those serving a full enlistment...they should get full GI Bill benefits.  But anyone honorably discharged earlier than their full enlistment may get reduced GI Bill benefits.  That includes a reduction in BAH if going to school full-time after discharge.  Full-time students using the GI Bill get a housing allowance.

As far as planning when your sailor will be home on leave...just forget about that right now!  HA!  Too hard to determine.  When my son was there, most in his class had this 4 week hold after graduation.  His was a self-paced program...so some finished 2 weeks before others

What is indoc mean? And what do they do when they are on hold especially if its a month. And so you mean 21 weeks could me 30 weeks or more before he will be able to get a leave tto come home .He will be able to come home a little while right? And all this will count towards his time in service? I now guess i can hope for christmas at this rate is that right?

my son got to A school and waiting i think 3 weeks to class up.... not too bad.. then got orders just before graduation...then had to wait another 5 weeks for OPS school...

after my daughter arrived at book camp she had indoc and a week later was ready for classes to begin. The next class was ready to start but it filled up before they got to mu daughter's name on the list. It went in alphabetical order and her last name was near the bottom of the list. Poor thing had been waiting at the end of lines because of her last name since t-ball days when she was 4 lol.

They can have hold times both before classes begin and then after classes are over they can have hold time when waiting on orders like Diannep;s son did.

Comment by diannep on February 17, 2013 at 6:24pm

Yep, I agree with Lala.  And...in my son's case...he was on "hold" for almost a month after he graduated, waiting for his written orders to come in (already had verbals).  The Navy's motto:  Hurry up and wait!

Comment by Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons on February 17, 2013 at 5:28pm

As far as A-school goes most of them take longer than expected. The number of weeks or months they are told that A-school lasts is for the actual class itself. That time doesn't include the time it takes to class up or any hold time waiting for the next class to begin. They have to go through indoc when they get to the A-school base before they can start classes. It is different for each base but almost always takes longer than expected.
