~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.
~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.
~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.
~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:
• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:
• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.
Some Suggestions:
~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.
~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option
~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

*Travel insurance usually will not cover a change in PIR date (resulting in cancellation of plans sometimes since there are some situations where a SR will finally graduate past their PIR date dur to test failure, etc, but will then have no PIR....will head straight to A School)
A suggestion on making travel arrangements for PIR:
Once you get the form letter, if you find good deals out there, go for it ! However, I suggest you try and book your flights with Southwest Airlines, either into Milwaukee WI (45 min drive to GL, no traffic)....or.....Chicago-Midway (hour+ depending on traffic to GL). The reason is this: Should your SR get delayed for any reason in training (like mine did!), you will not be charged a change fee to change your flights. Also, 2 bags check for free. I incurred 2 change fees after my son was delayed....ugh....$150/each. Thankfully, the new fares were a bit cheaper so it made it like a $89/each change fee. Travel insurance usually will not cover a change in fee for a change in PIR date.
No problem booking hotels now either. You can usually cancel up until the day before or day of arrival. Suggested hotels from good reports on here are:
Navy Lodge (book in your SR's name if you/spouse don't have military ID)
Springhill Suites (Marriott)
Courtyard Inn (Marriott)
Residence Inn (Marriott) - we stayed there and enjoyed it
Holiday Inn Express
Navy Lodge GL is about a mile from RTC. The other hotels are close together, about 4-5 miles from the base, with PIR shuttle service available for that morning either through Sarge (more about him later) or the local taxi service acting as shuttles that morning ($3/pp each way--for both Sarge's and this one). Sarge is retired military and runs his own cab service, so would be happy to "shuttle" people to and from the airports, to/from PIR, and around town. He also has a very nice MeetandGreet for the families/friends of the sailors (sorry, no sailors will be there) the night before PIR. The Marriott hotels/Holiday Inn Express are very close to the MeetandGreet.
Heather, If your sailor is staying in GL for A School stay through late Sunday or even Monday morning if possible. Those staying in GL will have liberty on Sat and Sun from approx 6am to 10pm, as well as Friday after they have moved to the TSC side.
If your sailor will be flying out for school stay until at least late Sat. evening or Sunday morning. You can meet your sailor at the airport and wait with them at the gate until they leave.
