ILoveMySailor/Fiance - Here is a post I did for someone in the 03/09 PIR group.
Well...the bottom line is you can't deny anyone getting married. ..as long as they are of age. But he will be in the military and will have a COC - Chain of Command. He would have to speak with his RDC's in Boot Camp. I don't know what the policies are and in the military things can move like molasses and they can move like a roaring river!
Some of the difficulty is where and when does he leave for "A" school.
If he is flying out of state for "A" school then it is most likely a very small window for this. Most that fly out of state only have PIR day with their loved ones. They are taken to the airport the morning after PIR around 1-2 AM...then wait there for their flight.
Those staying at Great Lakes for "A" school might have an easier time of it as they have liberty during the day until about 8-10 PM each night. Again, should check on policies.
You'd have to check the laws and such for the area. I think I found a discussion on it...it's from last June. I have skimmed through it and will give you the link. Please read all the way through the posts...I believe there is Courthouse info and such. One couple did it.
Getting Married in Great Lakes
Then there is this one:
Getting Married the weekend of PIR
...and this:
Also, there are a lot of posts on the discussion forum that might have info.
This is the main Group and I am sure there are ladies over there that have advice:
Girlfriends, Fiances,and Wives of Sailors
(All the underlined are clickable links and will open into a new page)
I've been told that you can get the 24-hour waiting period waived. I'm working on trying to verify that information. Also I know getting permission is gonna be the hardest part. Hopefully he can. I haven't checked with the fiancee/girlfriend/wife group, but I will now that you mention it, thanks. And it's ok, both mothers know, are very excited, and of course invited :) If anyone else can help provide information for me, that would be greatly appreciated!
I have actually heard different reports on this subject. I know there have been 2 or 3 members on this site who did get married to their Sailor on PIR weekend. But I have heard they have to have permission and go through all the proper channels and PAPERWORK. I have also heard that there has to be extenuating circumstances in order to get permission. It is not easy to get and now that most of them fly out Saturday morning it is probably very unlikely they would have the time. I believe you have to get the license 24 hours before the wedding. If that is true then it seems like it could only be done if they are staying in GL for A-school. I hope someone else can clarify any or all of this. Have you checked with the Fiancee/girlfriend/wife group? They may have better answers for you. I can tell you from experience they can and do get married during A-school and they don't always tell their moms :( lol
I know this is probably a dumb question, but would it be possible to get married (court house marriage) after my sailor graduates? I've heard that I probably won't have time. And I also heard that they aren't allowed to go and get married when they are on liberty. Help... :(
zStratmom and Captain, thanks for the info and encouragement. I will be more patient and just keep writing letters and look forward to PIR. I am still not sure why he is in a performing division. he doesn't play an instrument or wasn't on a drill team. One more question I will ask him in 36 days.
All you have to do is see it written and the memories come flooding back to you..... NOW HEAR THIS, NOW HEAR THIS, LIBERTY CALL, LIBERTY CALL.... So totally amazing.
well hey capt'n- finally a reason for our SR having an unmotivational band director...ALL four of ours (talented may i had) lost interest fast in performing... too bad, came from a long line of proud marchers, a US Flag carrier, a rifle twirler and momma & nana majorettes... yes, i tear up EVERYtime i hear the national athem or watch the Flag march by... and i can't imagine the "waterworks" when we hear Liberty call!!
SARGE has posted a change to his M & G:

Carolyn19 - Remember, your kiddo is in a 900 division. Generally, its referred to as performing division. In case you don't know, here's how that happened...
When the recruits showed up, the RDCs asked if anyone played in their high school band or were on a drill team. Those that raised their hands were "volunteered" to be in a performing division.
Remember, it can take time to fill a division and I suspect that it can take a little longer to fill a performing division. This is important, because that boot camp clock doesn't really start until that division is formed and commissioned.
Once it is full, the performing division is at yet another disadvantage. Specifically, they are required to pass training like everyone else AND prepare for the graduation performances.
How do they find the time to do that? Well that's easy. You know that time everyone else has to write letters? The 900 divisions are practicing.
Carolyn19 - the disappointment is normal and a natural response, but don't let it overwhelm you. I only received one letter from my second son during his entire BC experience. AND it was only half a letter. He sent his brother the other half. (You have to love the ingenuity). I also didn't get the calls between the "I'm ok" and the "I'm a Sailor!"
Celebrate every snippet of news from other moms. Connect with those in your SR's division--because sometimes they mention friends and bunkmates in their letters. ;-)
