Awoodlyn, You have every right to be frustrated. I wonder if your son's division is still working on training the recruit in the mail room. I would think you should get a letter this week. My son arrived on 1/30 and I just received my first letter on Friday. They are only allowed to mail letters on Sunday I believe so if someone has not been trained I imagine it would not have gone out. I may be wrong, maybe a veteran mom can explain it better. I feel your frustration!
Today marks the 18th day my son left from boot camp and I recieved his I'm here safe call. I have recieved his form letter and box. I have not recieved a letter or phone call from my son in 18 days, I don't even know if he is alive. I understand boot camp is structured to convert him into a navy man, however his life was entrusted to my by God first and I have a right to know if he is at least safe or sick or ok. These rules of no contact need to change. I don't need the details of what is happening but I am his mother and I need to know if he is ok. This is very cruel.
IDK either...It is crushing
I do know that when my son was in Boot he went to the doctor three times. He had to request through the Medical Yeoman first...who then goes to the RDC's. He went and "popped" for fever the first time...second had pneomonia...but only bad enough to get SIQ for a few days...last time fever again. He was allowed to go. He asked because he said he had never felt that way before when sick and knew it had to be seen.
But I have read many of the flip sides to this...many who don't want to go...don't want to get set back etc...
I do know (as most of us do) that "P" days is for running all the tests that they can to declare them FFD - Fit For Duty...there is NO physical training until this happens.
My prayers and thoughts are with both families...heartbreaking..I pray also for the safety of all our SRs there in Bootcamp...Please Lord keep them all safe and be there for the two SRs and thier families.
Guy in January, just a week before PIR...collapsed during run. Girl from pneumonia (they think) on 2/10.--had only been at RTC for 10 days HIGHLY unusual for them to lose SRs like this.
So so glad, FTLW, that her family got there to be with her before she passed away. I pray for them daily...just can't imagine.
I thought it was a guy not a girl?
martine - I know dear...so sad. I did read on RTC FB that her Family was able to be with her before she passed.
I know Capn' and yes...it is a friggin shame what we see happening. We all have our stories of the sacrifices made...the ones who want to serve...make a career out of something they admire and respect...only to have someone else pull the rug out from under them. The only way I know right now for me anyways is to make sure I use the avenues available to me to strive to make change...vote, and with today’s technology...find good great organizations and support them. Hubby helps me in that department as he is "out there" (I’m a SAHM…yeah right…with teenagers it’s more like SOutHM) and I tend to get all estrogen-y and shout at the TV when it says something I don't like!
I have to admit...as a woman, wife, mother...my life is busy and full of serving the ones I love here in the role I have...in my generation that role has been very blurred and while fast approaching 50...it was easy to think that I would never "get it right"...it's always a work in progress...always room for improvement to strive to do what I can for those around me that I love...strive to serve a Loving God (I've got a few "bad habits" that might catch me some hot water too Captain! LOL), and learn to be obedient and do what I am asked too.
Through this last year and the "scattering" of some of my men...hubby in Iraq and son at BC and then "A" school...wow...so hard, but so rewarding. Some days I feel like I got the booby prize though LOL...but you press on.
Many of you this is your first exposure to the military...no background at all. You didn't ask for this...but it's yours now. Moms, Dads, Wives, GF/BF...and so on. You'll each fulfill that role in a different way. It was laid on my heart more and more as I was "blessed" to serve my DH while he was so far away...and try to make our marriage stronger...to serve his buddies when I could and to reach out to their families in whatever way they needed it…that the word “support” kept entering the picture. Most of the service members said their families were fine...and I left it alone...but I had a couple I was able to talk to...one young woman in particular. I am so grateful for that...as I felt so lost and alone for many years as the wife of not only a first responder but a military wife thrown in. (I joke and say I am married to Rambo, Clint Eastwood (pick any of his movies), Indiana Jones, John McLane and the guy from Mr. Mom all rolled into one! Throw in People magazines Sexiest-Man-Alive...and that is my picture of my Hubby!)
It’s ironic that you use the word “advocate” because that is another one for me. My husband is an NCO so his role is a busy one…while he was gone I had the task of also handling our money…really learning how to read an LES and dealing with the paperwork side of things. There were snafus (always are) and I remembered telling him, “I am your advocate here, while you are there.” As I marched myself down to the base to deal with it…and of course as always…the words hit home MORE once you say them!
There were fun moments with the support too…our Church does a salute to honor the military every July 4th and DH usually MC’s. We ask those that are serving and that have served to stand as we honor each branch through song and the presentation of their flag. I “stood” in his place this last year and again it was brought to me about support…and I asked if we could ask those that had service members who weren’t here with us…deployed, stationed elsewhere, or gone to their Maker…to stand and represent them as they, the family, “serve” too.
I’ve already talked enough about why I am on here…but my biggest goal with that is to help y’all get over the first hurdle of BC!
You will all find your ways…small and big…whatever you do and whatever way you do it…it all means something to someone you love.
Off my soapbox! Have a great weekend!
Okay...not looking so much like this anymore today...after the cup 'o joe...or two!
