OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Once your Sailor completes A school and joins the fleet, titles are RatingRate(Warfare Specialties)

Dad to a CTR1(SW/IDW),

Comment by ellen0502 on April 16, 2014 at 11:59am

Your sailors title will be their rate/rating. So like CatMomma said  your would use the alphabetical in addressing them. SN, FN, AA, FA etc.

Here is a link to rate marks for E-1 through E-3.

Thanks for the info on the ratings  :)

A quick addition to dianne's comment on Tuition Assistance:

TA pays $250 per semester hour for up to 16 semester hours per fiscal year. That works out to $4000 and an average of 4 classes per year. Not a bad deal.

Ladies, you can go to the website below and look in the table for your sailor's rank/rate.  It is in the 2nd column from the right.  The table also shows the color of their stripes:

For nukes, the title in front of the sailor's name is:

SN = Seaman (for Electronics Technician (ET))

FN = Fireman (for Electricians Mate (EM) and Machinists Mate (MM))

Oh - good point about the different types of apprentice / jobs...

Comment by StacyLHR (14/136) on April 16, 2014 at 10:17am

This is what I found:  SN = Seaman or E3

Question: When I write to my son now... do I just put his last, first, I or is there a "title" (such as SR when at RTC)

Comment by diannep on April 16, 2014 at 8:50am

shannon:  My son tried to start online classes when he first arrived at duty station.  He had his 2 yr degree when he went in.  They would not allow him to until he completed his Navy Quals, etc.  So your son probably will have to complete his Navy work first before enrolling.  I believe what my son told me is that if you start in the Navy with online classes (with approval), they pay tuition but the sailor pays for the books...not positive on that, but it is not fully paid for.  They probably are limited on how many credit hrs they can take at a time also, but since my son didn't end up doing this, not sure about that.  He is now out of the Navy and is completing his Bachelors (hopefully by this summer) using the GI Bill.
