OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

My son is Ship 14 Division 146 =) Got to speak to him briefly yesterday. So nice to hear his voice. I hope you all get a phone call.

I am not diannep or Catmom509 :), but Ship 13 is the USS Marvin Shields.

I can hardly wait to hear his voice! I figured the call will be next weekend by everything I am reading. My son's PIR is 4/18
Diannep to CatMom do you know the name of the Ship that is 13?
Comment by diannep on February 28, 2014 at 9:27am

...AS a N4Moms veteran now....(in post below)  ...and DOWN this road before....Sorry about that!

Comment by diannep on February 28, 2014 at 9:25am

Ivall3:  Calls are very random...there is no way to predict when they will come.  They can even tell you they have a "scheduled" call and then they won't call...maybe the division wasn't allowed to make them?  Maybe they were, but your SR had watch or an appt and missed it?  There are so many reasons, so just keep your phone close to you at all times....even in the bathroom and when stepping outside to get the mail, etc!  Calls in the past have been missed during these times!  Answer ALL CALLS when you have someone at Bootcamp, even those that you suspect are telemarketers!  Get rid of them quickly!

Good Morning All !

Not sure if you were mentioning in your comment below that CatMom's PIR is a week ahead of yours, but she has a sailor!  She is on here helping at a N4Moms veteran now that her daughter is a sailor.  That is why she is able to help so much...because she has been "this road" as have I!  :-)

CatMom509...thank you so much for info on identifying the call but why do you think we will get our calls this weekend?

Comment by lvall3 (Ship 13 Div 143) on February 28, 2014 at 6:27am

Lisa...my son as well is Ship 13 Div 143!I cant wait for his first letter, to hear his voice (it will be so hard to hold back the tears til we hang up), see him in uniform and for his hug! Where do you live?

Comment by Michelle-Reese's Mom (S14, D146) on February 27, 2014 at 10:10pm
K10mom - yes! I can't wait. Who am I kidding... I can't wait to just get a letter! I really miss his face so I can't think of much that would stop me from going. :)
