~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

For their civies (at least at GL).

T-Shirts must be printed with graphics (not graphic :) ), or lettering of some sort if they are white or blue, white and blue are considered underwear. My son won't wear a plain black shirt just because it can sometimes "look" blue.  No frayed, bleached or torn jeans and the hem cannot touch the ground (hem fraying).

I think there are restrictions on tank tops, flip flops, and certain types of shorts, but I am not exactly sure what those are and it could vary from base to base.

Well, your new sailor will be advised of all of this once he goes through INDOC when he arrives there.  But they can wear their personal clothing in their "off" time once they phase up.

Comment by Connie821 on April 22, 2013 at 2:55pm

Thanks diannep.  So they will be allowed to wear tank tops and flip flops on base after phasing and when off duty?  I am pretty good at picking out clothes for him, but i was wondering what the dress code is...

Comment by diannep on April 22, 2013 at 2:17pm

Connie:  Why not ask him what type of clothes he wants you go bring...or....bring him "a selection" and let him choose?  You can always take the extras back and mail them later to him.

FL weather.....let's see.....I'm a native S. Floridian....we love flip flops, tank tops, shorts....sand between our toes, like to go barefoot most times (although those Northern Floridians are not as crazy as we are down here!).   You can always give him a "giftcard" to shop for himself once allowed off base for his "FL style!"

They usually phase up to wear civies in Phase 3, I believe.  About 2-3 weeks.

Yep, T minus 50 minutes or so before it is possible that calls could start from 161/162/924!  Phone handy!  They could come later...many times, they do.  But don't leave that phone for a second.  And remember....be checking their FBs in case they got on the computers before they got to use the phones!

As far as "trading their covers" (i.e., traded their RECRUIT ballcaps for their NAVY ones), that happened this morning.  They don't call right after the capping ceremony.  They have other things to do before they are allowed to call, including lunch!

Waiting for my, "I am a Sailor", call!! I think she should be wrapping up and trading up covers about now. Oh, so proud!!!!!
Comment by Connie821 on April 22, 2013 at 12:31pm

So my son is wanting me to bring some civvies to pass over at the airport.  I know he won't get to wear them for .... how many phases?  2 weeks (phase 1), then what?  I am thinking chinos, collared polo, belt, new non-tighty whities, socks, a pair of Vans shoes.  What think veteran Sailor Moms?  Oh and since he is going to a warm Florida school location, a pair of shorts/tshirt?

No worries Connie, it happens. Excitement takes over and you want to shout from the rooftops (been there, can't blame you!). :)
