~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Mike:  The PIR shuttle service is used that morning by many hotels, including the ones I listed in my last post below.  Also, Sarge has a shuttle service for those hotels (like Navy Lodge) that don't use the area shuttle service.  The shuttle service is $3/pp each way and your sailor can ride back with you (unless staying at GL A School in which case they move over there right after PIR....those flying out later in the weekend can leave RTC with you).

I booked my hotel reservations and my airline ticket. staying from thursday to sunday. my son is going to florida for A school so i do not know yet if his flight will leave sat or because of the holiday weekend sunday But i want to spend every moment i can with him

Hi Mike, I just made a reservation at the Red Roof Inn. They provide

free shuttle service to the base.

Comment by Mike803 on April 9, 2013 at 5:18pm

diannep, thanks again. I think I will do that. I really want a hotel with shuttle service to the base as I understand that trying to take your car on to the base can be very time consuming. Do you know if the hotels you suggested provide shuttle service? I appreciate your advice.

Mike:  You can actually go ahead and make hotel reservations if you want...no penalty it you change them.  Being a holiday weekend, hotels will get full fast.  Some good ones to consider are:

Springhill Suites

Courtyard Inn

Residence Inn

Navy Lodge

Thanks for the information,  diannep. That's what I thought but was not sure. I have not yet received the form letter so I will wait for that to be sure. I am mainly curious because I want to make hotel reservations as soon as possible. We would be there from May 22nd through the 26th if his PIR is the 24th. We are driving from Virginia so I want to be sure we have plenty of time. Thanks again.

HINTS ON LETTER WRITING:  Plain envelopes, preferably white.  Some RDCs don't like their SRs getting colored envelopes, some don't care.  No need to take a chance!  And, no stickers or outside writing that will draw attention to your SR.  This is the last thing they want!

Also, don't make the envelope thick...they will have to open it in front of the RDCs.  Better to send more than one letter if you have a long one in mind!

Also, no singing cards!  They can have cards, but singing ones can cause your SR to do IT (intensive training like push ups) until the battery dies!

You can include a couple of bandaids (blisters from boots) or stamps inside the folder letter if you like.  Again, just don't make it thick!

Want to send piks (they love them!)?  Consider scanning onto the back of your letter, collage style, or on another sheet of paper.  Again, doesn't draw attention to the letters, and also, takes up less storage room.  They have very little storage space there.  In fact, some may ask you eventually to send a larger envelope so they can mail home the letters they have received for "safe keeping."  You are allowed to do this!

Colleen:  Refundable tickets are just too expensive.  If you can fly Southwest into either Chicago-Midway (hour from GL) or Milwaukee (45 minutes from GL), there is no change fee and 2 bags check for free.  Milwaukee has less traffic, cheaper car rental, and sometimes the flights are cheaper.

If Southwest is not an option for you, you still may find it cheaper taking a chance on a "change" fee as opposed to paying refundable ticket rates.

AnnLou:  Not sure about travel insurance covering change dates....better check with the individual airlines.

youngestson:  Yes, you can start writing once you have received the form letter with the graduation/contact info.  Just know that mail is held from them for the first 2 weeks of bootcamp until they can get the Recruit Mail Petty Officer trained.

Comment by diannep on April 9, 2013 at 2:11pm

Mike:  Yes, processing days are part of bootcamp time.  Training weeks are actually only 6 weeks long ---start after processing days -- and then they will have anywhere from a day to a week (depending on their division) of "down time" before PIR.

Your SR could either be in this group or the next.  If your SR is in a "push" division, they actually have less bootcamp days to get all done.  So better just wait for the form letter...or...you can call your recruiter and see what PIR group your SR is in.

Just a reminder that your PIR weekend is memorial Day weekend.  So....flight schedules for your SRs may be different.  They could possibly fly out on Sunday rather than Saturday....so if you can stay through the weekend. that would be good.  More time with your new sailor possibly!

For those with sailors staying in GL for A School, stay until Monday night or even Tues if you can since your sailors will have daytime Liberty with you Fri - Mon.
