~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.
~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.
~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.
~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:
• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:
• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.
Some Suggestions:
~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.
~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option
~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Wire Frames eh? Pretty cool!!
That is too funny ...how about "Le Boo-Boo". Oh geez...
Momwhoisproud - That is a very common vent we hear from BC! So no worries. You are correct about "the first letter" and "learning the ropes". Things get much better and they start to gel more around the third week of Training.
They actually do not set whole Divisions back. At least we have never seen that!(Another common threat we hear from BC) Setbacks, ASMO (Assignment Memorandum) as it is called in the Navy (setback has a different name in each branch), are done on an individual Recruit basis. It can be for medical, academic or disciplinary reasons.
This talks a little bit about the PIR date and setbacks. From the Family Guide (direct link)by RTC:
INTERRUPTIONS IN TRAINING
Once a division’s graduation date has been set it will not change. An individual Recruit’s graduation is dependent on successful completion of the training requirements. Should your Recruit experience a disruption in training due to an academic or physical test failure, injury or illness, they will receive the opportunity to call the person of their choice to advise her/him of their situation.
CONGRATS on the letters and thanks for sharing. Hope to hear more come in!
Doing the happy dance!!! Received our 1st letter today.
thanks Jana-
Momwhoisproud-hopefully they have all figured it out by now.
BPATT'sMom205..I got a letter today as well!! My son was very upbeat..same thing.. very funny letter! He was cracking up bc they can't pronounce his last name (let's just say it's very french) and the RDC said (yelled..teehee) it will be a long 8 weeks trying to figure this name out so we will just call you BooBoo. My son was trying not to laugh out loud. He was very happy to report that the eyewear has been upgraded to wire frame instead of BCG's. I was pleasantly surprised at how good of a letter writer he is..who knew!!
BPATT'smom205 Its is so refreshing to hear about your letter It puts a smile on my face.
Diannaron what is your son's rate ?? My son is IC
My boy is the type who would never step up and say he needed to call home..not going to happen! sooo..no phone call here. I just briefly reassured him in my letter that his friends that ran in the Marathon, as well as his friend who's dorm at Fisher College is a block away, are all fine and that he has nothing to worry about!
MomThatLovesHerSon-he also went in 04/02/13
RE: Boston-I read somewhere that the SR's with family in Boston got to make a 2 min. call to their families. I sent some info to my son re: the bombing. I believe they know about it since they will be the ones to defend our country against such things.
For those that have sailors on the USS Marvin Shields -
I am Craig, the designer of the boot camp challenge coins. I am in the process of writing the story about Ship-13 and CM3 Marvin Shields for PIRGifts. I wanted to share this video of the presentation of the Medal of Honor by President Johnson to Mrs. Shields and their 2 1/2 year old daughter, Barbara. It's kind of moving. Look at video starting at 12:50. It's cool, but sad....
