~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Just a want to clarify.  No one can walk to the ships with their sailors....so the walking back with them that Sarge mentioned means to walk out of PIR Hall and to the Chapel/Nex area with them, then you wait there for them to go/return from their ships.  My sailor took about 30-45 mins to get back to us waiting at the NEX.  So it could be a little while before they return.

When Sarge mentioned labeling phones, etc....don't forget to do that with the photos too (in a large cardboard folder).  There was a family who accidentally left their photos on the airplane.....they had not labeled them with their name/phone number, but luckily someone turned them in right away to the USO at the airport, the family contacted them and mailed them to the family.  But having contact info gives them a better chance of getting back to you!

I am providing this information to assist you with your travel plans for PIR.

Please review and determine which one of the three groups your sailor belongs to. Remember –this is not an official U.S. Navy document and is intended solely as a guide and I am not responsible or liable for any loss of funds related to travel, hotel accommodations, or any other incidents arising from using this guide. See the taxi rates at the end of this guide for your protection. If your sailor is staying here at Great Lakes for their a school, please pass my phone number (847)212-0246 to them and a copy of the rates.

Also, if you are coming to the meet and greet, please RSVP on the events page so I can get an accurate count and order enough food.

GROUP I - Those shipping out of Great Lakes for their “A” School and who are not holdovers.

When Graduation LIBERTY is called (approximately 10:35 AM), you can go on the graduation floor and greet your sailor. Your sailor is free to leave with you immediately (UNLESS THEY HAVE WATCH) and you can enjoy your day. The sailors can ride with you in the shuttles or taxicabs. Some sailors must go back to their ship to get their photos. You can walk back with them and wait at the Chapel or wait at the NEX while they get their photos or other items they want to share with you. NORMALLY, most sailors must be back at RTC (GATE 6 - ILLINOIS STREET) ON THE TOE LINE NO LATER THAN 20:30hrs (8:30PM). Some “Honor” ships don’t have to be back until 21:00 hrs (9:00 PM) ** ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR SAILOR ** for their return times

It is best to contact your sailor in early in boot camp and have them send their photos home when they order them. REASON – After graduation, the line in the NEX to pick them up could be an hour long. Valuable time is lost standing in Line.

Departing Sailors to A-Schools outside Great Lakes normally leave on Saturday Morning (12:30 AM – 04:00 AM). The times will vary – check with your sailor. In extreme cases, some may leave on Sunday Morning. If they are leaving on Sunday morning, they will have liberty at 7:00 AM Saturday morning and you must meet them at Gate 6 – Illinois Street.

Buses normally depart Great Lakes (RTC) around 12:30 AM and 4:30 AM heading to O’Hare (TERMINAL 2 - DOOR 2A) or Midway (DOOR #1). Check your sailor’s schedule.

You can meet your sailor at the Airport. You can bring their cell phones and laptops. Your sailor can get you a security pass from the Airline Counter. DO NOT CALL THE AIRLINES OR THE USO. Only your sailor can get you a pass at the airport from the airline that he/she is traveling on. If you are a flying passenger for that date, your boarding pass will suffice and you can wait with them at theirgate. Remember if you get a security pass, you will be treated as a flying passenger and you will have to meet all FAA and TSA guidelines.

Park in the Short-term garage or remote. Cost is - maximum $35.00 per day– average is $6.00 per hour Check with other families and try to share cost. I can provide late night (to see your sailor off) or anytime taxi service to O’Hare, Midway, and local service at a very reasonable cost. Cab sharing is encouraged. My direct number is (847-212-0246).

Sailors cannot bring any food, candy, snack, liquids, civilian clothing, or electric gear back to their ships. Make sure you sailor has their I.D. cards, Liberty Pass, rain coats, personal gear, and their dog tags.

No alcohol or tobacco products may be used or consumed during Graduation weekend.

Always check the shuttles or cabs when you get out. Put a label on your cell phone in case you leave it in a cab. Know the taxi rules – all fares after graduation are “metered runs” unless they are to a flat rate area. There is a copy of the ordinance that governs the taxi’s cabs in the Great Lakes area at the end of this document.

GROUP II - sailors who have graduated and are HOLD OVERS at RTC.

This group of sailors has graduated and must have additional processing or waivers prior to departure from RTC to their new assignment. Additional processing can include but is not limited to:

Reclassification
•Medical Waivers
•Security Clearances
•Additional Medical Treatment
•Administrative Waivers/Review
•Awaiting A-School date at a location other than Great Lakes

These sailors will have only a short time with you after graduation (about 30 minutes). They will return to their boot camp ships and will be out-processed and then moved to another ship on RTC for holdover in-processing. They will remain at RTC until matters are resolved or school dates assigned. They will have Liberty Friday (after in processing) and on Saturday and Sunday. Check with them for their return times. They must return to RTC on Friday night GATE 6 - Normally NO LATHER THAN 21:00hrs (9 o'clock). CHECK WITH YOUR SAILOR!

Group III - sailors who are staying at NSTC (Great Lakes Naval Service Training Command) “A” SCHOOL and are not holdovers.

This group of sailors have graduated and ARE NOT HOLD OVER’S and will be transferred across the street to the NAVAL STATION GREAT LAKES TRAINING COMMAND (NSTC).

In processing takes, about 4 to 5 hours and they normally will not be available for pick up until 2:30PM TO 4:30PM.

These sailors will have only a short time with you after graduation (about 30 minutes). They will return to their boot camp ships and will be out-processed and then bused to NSTC FOR THEIR A-SCHOOL.

They will remain at NTSC until graduation from A-School. They will have Liberty Friday (after in processing) and on Saturday at 6:00 AM and Sunday at 06:00 AM. Check with them for their return times. They must return to NSTC EVERY NIGHT TO GATE 1 (Farragut Ave) NO LATER THAN - 22:00hrs (10 o'clock).

NOTE ** YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO SIGN YOUR SAILOR OUT/IN ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.

Currently there is NO need to sign your sailor out or in on Friday; however this could change, every ship has different policies.

If you do not have your own vehicle make sure, your taxi can go inside the base. It is a long walk (about a mile) to most ships. Only certain cabs can go inside the base. The cab hours to go inside the base are Mon-Friday 2:00PM until 10:00 PM and on Saturday and Sunday from 06:00 AM- 10:00 PM. If a holiday falls on Monday-Friday, the hours remain the same as above, no exceptions.

Last note – if you have a problem with a taxi driver, get his name from his/her permit (which must be displayed), the cab company, cab number, and MOST IMPORTANTLY a signed receipt on company receipt book. The Taxi companies are regulated by the base and the City of North Chicago when the fare originates in North Chicago or on any Government Property regulated by the Navy. If you have an issue on base or on Government Property, call the GLPD immediately at 847-688-5555 option 3 for dispatch and wait for the police officer. If off base, dial 911.

It is good Idea to give a copy to your sailor if they are staying at Great Lakes for their “A” school. Please also give them my loyalty rewards card ( the one you received at the meet and greet) and program my phone number (847)212-2046 their phones so you can have peace of mind that your sailor is riding with a professional and a retired military person who cares. If you did not make the meet and greet, tell you sailor to get a rewards card from me on their first ride.
