meryl:  One other Lab story to go along with yours.  Then I'll shut up...I promise!

My hubby passed away 6 days after 9/11....ughhh.....horrible time....sons were 15 and 17.  Anyway, so much to do closing his veterinarian practice, selling his property, estate stuff, yadda yadda yadda.  I was in "get it done" mode...didn't even cry much until I could take a breath (hubby's death unexpected).

Soooo.....one day....when my sons were in school and it finally sunk in that he was gone, I was sitting in the recliner in my family room...tears starting to roll down my cheeks...my sweet Lab girl (one who passed away in 2008) got up, came over to my chair, put her paws on the arm of it, and gently kissed the tears on my check a couple ot times...then went back to lie down.  I'll never forget that...it was almost like she was saying:  It's ok.  It'll be ok.....I truly think that all of God's lessons to us are in our pets.....especially the dogs/cats.

meryl:  We are a "Lab" family...have had them since my brother got the first one when I was a teenager. I know their fantastic devotions and desire to please!   We had a Lab when this rescue pup (Dobie/Rotty/"something else" mix!) came in...and selfishly, I think that is why I didn't want to take on another dog...because he wasn't a Lab.  Ya know what my sailor son said when I said we could get another Lab if he wanted another dog?  "Mom, why would you turn this little guy away, a dog that desperately needs a home, when you know so many people want Labs?"   Ooooops!  Of course, I was speechless because he was absolutely right.  "Rebel" has been a blessing to us....even though he HAS lived up to his name (sons named him) and keeps me on my toes....kind of like my sailor son did!  Hmmmmm.....Lost my sweet Lab to cancer right before Christmas 2008, and was so devastated and grief-stricken (didn't expect her to die...wasn't aware of the cancer until the end)...that I drove 4 hours to Tampa FL a month later and came home with the most wonderful rescue Lab boy.  Both of my furry boys are 8 yrs old...get along great....and are very protective of their "mommy!"  I love them....but Labs for sure have my heart....

Pianomom, yes my Sailor is coming home. She will be here tonight. It is a 7 hour drive. Remember I am one of the veteran moms on this site. She had PIR last year in July and her husbands was in Oct. She had a funeral to attend this morning for someone in her command, he was killed on a motor cycle. Please keep his family in your prayers as well. My sailors are on their way home for her husbands, grandfathers funeral.

awww diannep-that is so sweet!  had to jump in and let these lovely mommas know that BC is JUST the beginning!  they are about to scatter to the Four Winds with a bunch of questions.  for those coming to Pensacola we've got their beach chair and a "fruity drink with an umbrella" ready. it can rattle the nerves of any momma/gf/bf/auntie/granny when their Sailor gets to the "next phase"....you've learned a lot so far and have so much more to learn. first off for the new Sailors...NO one is screaming their guts out at the them....now isn't that a nice way to start off some thing new? whew....and a semi-private barracks room too!!! but i don't want to get ahead of myself for you still waiting on that "I'm a Sailor call" and you getting your bags packed for PIR.....which is pretty freakin' awesome!!

Just got a letter from my SR (ship 09, div 205)--he's sick too and he been getting medical care, but is really enjoying basic.  They did the marlinspike last week, got pictures, hair cuts, gotsome shots and ordered their division flag shirts, etc. He states that Battle Stations are the 14th.  He says they are down to 70 people  and were about to lose more.
