Jennblue: The first thing is to....enjoy PIR! The next thing is to join your A School group on here, and maybe the group for your new sailor's job. Then, of course, once a duty station is assigned, join that group too! There is still lots of support on this site after Bootcamp....although there is nothing like the excitement of Bootcamp for newbies....however, the other excitement builds on the ship groups when they are returning from deployment!
You will love being back in contact with your sailor....that is the best part of post-Bootcamp. Emails, texts, calls Skype-Facetime....etc. Also, some visit their sailors when in A School....wait for them to "phase up" so they can leave base and spend overnight time with you as well....some of you may be fortunate enough to live within the radius they must stay in to leave the base for the weekend once they are phased up. They may take some buddies home with them!
Ellen0502 and Diannep, Thank you both for the great info! The support from you "Veteran Members" has been fabulous! We are really getting down to it now but not quite here! I'm excited that we will have Sailor soon! Do you have any end of Basic tips or advice? I don't want to miss anything. I want to be doing every thing I can to be supporting my (soon to be) newbie Sailor! :)
Welcome, Daniel! Wow, what love you have for your gf...so wonderful. And thank you for your service in the Army! That is wonderful. Please stay on this group to get great support and lots of info!
Jennblue, Like diannep said, they will already be carrying a sea bag, a garment bag, and their backpack when on the move. The weight with just their Navy issued things is 80+ pounds. When they are carrying their items they must still be able to salute an officer, so right hand empty. Generally, Seabag on their back (quite the sight to watch them do that), backpack carried on their front, garment bag in their left hand.
Best to have what you give them fit in to what they are already carrying.
So do they have a carryon backpack already that they can slip a few things into when we are at the airport with them or should we bring a small backpack for snacks for the flight and a few things from home? My hubby laughed at this idea but this will be the first time in two months I can do some mom stuff so I want to bring any thing he is aloud to have! :)
I should add that the trade off of the computers/phones/personal items must be done at the airport----- and keep in mind that they have limited space to store these so just take the most wanted items....ship the rest to them. Ideally, these items should fit into their carryon backpack. They also have to keep up with two other pieces of luggage: a large (and full!) seabag and a garment bag (uniforms), both checked items but ones they must transport by themselves. So the less number of bags they have to keep up with, the better!
Good Morning!
Erica: My son took no computer with him when he went to A School. However, many want their personal computers for personal use...yes, they can normally have their cell phones at A School.
