That comment is only for sailors who have "A" school away from Great Lakes.

From what we found out on Navy dad's website, all Sailors will report back after Friday afternoon liberty. They will get up and leave on a bus between 1 and 3am for the airport. Some will have early flights, some later in the day flights, depending on where they are going and what airport they will be flying out of. The navy dads site said you can get up and go to the airport, get a "guest" security pass (limited to immediate family I think it said) and spend more time with your Sailor and watch then depart at the gate. Sometimes the Sailor's spend time at the USO in the airport, or some of the restaurants, or one parent even got a room at the airport hotel where they spent time before the sailor had to report to their gate. So lot's of options.

Navy Lodge is a good choice.  Simple but adequate furnishings, a great price, friendly staff, close to RTC.  Book in your SR's name if you do not have military ID yourself.

Yes, the most economical thing to do is to rent a car, even if you decide you want to take a shuttle to PIR (Sarge's service or local taxi service....I believe still $3/pp each way).  There are deals to be had on rental cars and the shuttles from/to the airports and around town can add up!  The shuttles are actually taxis operating as shuttles on PIR morning.

And, yes, most are in your situation.  Most sailors do not know their travel plans until right before PIR.  Most fly out on Sat., but some occasionally not until Sunday.  Best to travel home yourself on Sunday just in case!  If your sailor leaves on Sat., you can sightsee in Chicago!

I just called the navy lodge to make a reservation they told me they had plenty of rooms available. Is this the best stay? I'm not familiar at all with this area so I have so many questions. Most likely he will be leaving Saturday from what people have told me since his A school is in San Diego. So I'll only get to spend graduation day with him again nothing is confirmed until he is told something later on in boot camp. For the meantime I'm planning to stay until Sunday just in case. Is any one else staying in another hotel? I'm flying to Chicago is my best option to rent a car for when I'm there? If so where should I rent? I like to plan ahead of time so it sucks not really knowing anything. Is a shuttle to the base the easiest way there? What days are you ladies booking for? Anyone in the same boat as me where you aren't sure how long he's staying in GL after graduation? Sorry it's a lot of questions, this is just the only place I can get real answers from. Thanks again everyone!

AlaynaParents:  Yes, non-military family staying at Navy Lodge during PIR weekend is because they are allowed to be guests of their new sailor during that particular weekend.

Comment by diannep on June 16, 2015 at 2:54pm

No sailors are allowed overnights during PIR weekend.  Sailors may visit the rooms of their family members during Liberty, however.  In the past, there was sometimes a problem with sailors visiting family members staying at Navy Lodge during PIR weekend, but that has been resolved, we have been told.  So there should be no issues no matter what hotel you are staying in with your sailor visiting you during Liberty.

@love4one I got the two queen beds with kitchenette. She said the ones w/o a kitchen were all taken. but if its available when we get there they would change it. Its a cheaper rate. I am glad you were able to book in time.

@jojosmom- thank you. I actually just booked mine at the navy lodge as well. What kind of room did you get if you don't mind me asking?
Comment by jojosmom on June 16, 2015 at 1:45pm

I booked at Navy Lodge, 4 night is only 288 and no tax. I made my reservation on Friday,  guess I made it just in time. The Navy Inn and suites is the hotel I hear is having problems with SR's being there.. I think because they are actually on base.

Comment by Greenbelli on June 16, 2015 at 12:54pm

Well I got a room booked at the Navy Lodge, but may still look around, they only had 1 room left she said. I was hoping to get 2 rooms, so my son's girlfriend could have her own room. :-(
