Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:
• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:
• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.
Some Suggestions:
~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.
~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option
~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Once you receive the form letter, you can start giving that address to friends/family members. Not sure I would give out the recruiter's address as this can change.

TW: I agree with ellen. The Navy has had issues with FB because of the OPSEC violations. We were told that they have closed down some groups in the past (ones involving deployments) because of the risk to the Navy by things being posted. Like ellen said, no one knows for sure who is joining these groups. Just because a person has to ask to join doesn't mean that person is who he/she says they are. My guess is that the Navy has personnel who are constantly monitoring the social media sites for posts that could be a breach of security for our country.

The FB groups are mostly private and you have to join to read them and partake in conversation, the privacy issue however can be wide open. I do know the admin on most of the FB groups are good about OPSEC and PERSEC and what is posted, but remember in the FB groups as well as here, not everyone in the group may be who they say they are.
Joining and posting in a FB group is up to you, just be careful, names and personal information etc is exposed to everyone in the group, and can be passed on.

No letter here either :( so sad there is no mail on Sundays. I have to wait till I get home at almost 6pm to check the mail on Monday. AND I don't want anyone else to check, I want to be the one to open her letter .. lol .. is that bad? Xoxo

I am a little confused on this privacy thing, because of the fact that I just found a facebook page for pir 8/23/13, and people can join and all their information on facebook is on the groups page, including your and your SR's last name etc...but you do have to join the group so I guess it is somewhat private..I was wondering if this is appropriate or not?

I gave his mom the address but I haven't given anyone else that one so idk I guess it's up to you you'll just have to make sure they get the correct one if it's been updated once you do get the letter
