For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Comment by diannep on July 29, 2013 at 8:06am: napstersmom: Buying a phone for RTC is a good idea, but it won't work. There are "banks" of phones that they use, and there are some that aren't in such great condition. It is really up to RTC to have these phones repaired/replaced.

One suggestion is to ask your SR to push in the cord (into the handset and into the phone part) as sometimes this can get stretched so far as to lose contact with the phone/handset. Doesn't always work, but could!

Another "Veteran" Mom checking in!

My Sailor PIR’d in 05/2011. He is a Seabee Reservist. I have been an AF (Security Forces) Reservist wife for 28 + years…I know …not Navy…but I am somewhat familiar with military life! We have been through two Deployments. Our son enlisted while Hubby was in Iraq. This site was a Godsend and helped me get through not only our sons BC experience but my husbands and my separation for 6 months.

I am a “veteran” mom on the PIR groups mostly. I have been on them now for over a year and we have 7-8 PIR groups running at the same time.

Comment by napstersmom on July 28, 2013 at 11:33pm: Any ideas on how much a phone would cost? (see my last note.) I wish I knew what the phones were like and where they would buy one. Who would you contact to find out if this is even possible? This feels like one of those crazy ideas that might have some merit. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Comment by napstersmom on July 28, 2013 at 11:28pm: I'm starting to think we should do a fundraiser at the meet and greet to buy a new phone for the phone banks at boot camp. My son ended up with the same phone twice and it took 3 tries for us to be able to hear him talk.

Comment by napstersmom on July 28, 2013 at 4:41pm: I wonder why they would give a penicillin shot automatically? Hmmm. It does sound like the peanut butter shot is penicillin, though. I've given enough of those! I always apologize when I give it, telling them it's probably the worse shot I can give, but I give it to sick people, and I always tell them it'll be worth it. And it is!

Comment by clover65 on July 28, 2013 at 2:36pm: Brandi I found the definition for the peanut butter shot somewhere on the boot camp moms group, it is a boost for the immune systems, it contains gamma globulin ( whatever that is...) it does not contain penicillin in it but people allergic to penicillin have a reaction to this shot as well. My SR said it was penicillin as well.....I just hope it works and he feels better.

Comment by clover65 on July 28, 2013 at 1:06pm: Diannep I agree, too many shots at once will compromise their immune systems also explains why my SR has been sick, he was also out for a couple of days with a cold. He assure me that so far it has not interfere with his PIR date, but naturally I worry. He said the peanut butter shot was indeed awful and that every one walked away limping...ouch!!!! I think that the peanut butter shot is to improve their immune system, right??
