Hi, everyone who has a SR on Ship 4, div 818. My son left on July 3. We live in Ohio. Hope to hear from all of you soon.

Well, hopefully the joy he sees on the others' faces makes the wait worth while! :) I joked with him in one of my next letters that they must have made him the mail petty officer because he receives more mail than anyone else! haha! We have a pretty big family and I think most everyone has written him, plus people at church. I also joked that I hoped he had enough time to read all the letters he was receiving. Maybe that's why we have only rec'd one letter??? :)
On a sad note for me, we did not receive his phone call. He called his GF instead, which made me sad. Our baby is growing up! It's hard to come to grips with him leaving, then when he makes the choice to call his GF instead of us, brings it home even more. Knowing that he is a good person, responsible, is doing what he wants and that yes, he is able to make his own decisions and I have to let him go to live his own life..... still stinks for me. :)
But enough of my pity party. I am excited to read what everyone has to say and look forward to joining in!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi all - I am Joe's mom. I think we send lots of mail to Joe from the whole family. And boy sounds like I am happy there is no girlfriend to take away my phone call. :)
Joe's letters were just as chatty as his phone call. Sounds like he is getting used to the lack of sleep.
Oh and being in the hotel industry - I got a great deal at the candlewood suites in Waukegan. I even talked my husband into 2 nights since it sounds like he could be held up friday with paperwork and we want to see him. We are from Indiana so not too far and even have family in northern Indiana about 30 mins from downtown chicago but it would take longer to get to Great Lakes so a discounted hotel was perfect and we will have more time with Joe. Need to see if he has a "job".
My son was able to call both his dad and I and his girlfriend, though he only got to talk to her for a few minutes. I tried to keep it short since I knew he would want to talk to her longer but his dad talked to him for a long time. I felt sorry for his girlfriend since I know he would have preferred to talk to her.
You can have a pity party with us anytime, we are all here to support each other.Yes, they are growing up fast. I've been through this once since my SR has an older brother(11 years older) but it still is hard. And now that I have an empty nest it makes it harder. But I am also enjoying my free time so it has its benefits. Glad you have come aboard and we only have 5 Fridays left until we can hug our boys. Yeah!!!!!
Well, we got a letter from our son today! Actually my husband and I each got our own, so that was nice. He did say that he had tried to call me but that he couldn't get through, so I feel better about that. He said he would call next time he is able. Said he is tired but otherwise doing well. Food is good. Oh and he said he would do a triathalon with my husband when he got back! Pretty sure he will be in GREAT shape for that! :) my husband maybe not so ready.... :)
The empty nest would definitely take some getting used to. But I can see how there are benefits. And then the changes in the relationship. I can only see good in that as our boys grow and mature!
Sailormom64: I'm from Indy and have joined a moms group to meet for dinner once a month. Are you close to Indy? Its in Avon on Aug 2 this month. My first dinner with them.
And yeah, only 5 fridays! Cant wait! We are staying at the Marriott. Have heard about the meet and greets but need to get more info and look into it more.... will have other family with us who want to see my son on liberty.
QueenAnne - sorry I am reading this on the 3rd -- was at work til 7pm last night - I am in Westfield but would love to meet up -- keep me posted as to the next gathering
My SR told me he is friends with the SR who passes out mail! He said he always tells him ahead of time if he has any, so he really looks forward to mail time!
I received another letter today!! I don't know why it took longer to get here compared to the ones that came on Wednesday, but I just thought I would share that with everyone! He gave me a lot of details about what he has been doing, and answered a lot of my questions. He said they were up for 48 hours straight when he first got there, and he said the food is pretty good. He said there are about 90 guys in his division, he passed his start guide test along with his PFA and said he will make E-2 when he graduates. He said they have been really busy, but Sunday was his favorite day because he gets to write and send mail!
Congrats JLH on receiving another letter and getting so much info. Glad to hear he is doing so well.
My son also said the the lack of sleep the first few days (P-days) were torture. He said he NEVER wanted to do that again. He also told me that getting my letters were such a great part of the day. He said that chow time was a great break in the day and there was a lot to learn. He loves his job. Just misses home and his friends and his dog.
Did anyone else get letters today? After reading mine, I think it may have been written before the phone call because he repeats a few of the things he told us. Doesn't matter though, it's just great to see his handwriting, which is much larger than it used to be. Hope everyone got a letter too.
I got one too! But it was written the day before he talked to us and yes, I knew about all the things he wrote about already. It was still great to get a letter on a MONDAY! Yeah. Now I know to expect them anyday of the week which is nicer to know than waiting for Wed or Thurs. Haha, I just looked and his writing was much larger than before, funny.
I got letters yesterday also!! He said they get to write and send mail every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday after 3-1 day which was last Thursday. He also wrote the day before our phone call but didn't repeat much, he said he's been sick with a cold for about a week but was talking about going to medical to get some medicine.
