Hi Ladies~questions about PIR; how far is the airport from the base in Great Lakes? and what is the nearest motel? I am wondering how many nites to book at the motel, do I rent a car, do they have a shuttle and how long is liberty; as well as when do they fly...my daughter is going to Texas. I need to book a flight, but need to know somemore specifics before doing so.

I've been wondering about when to book a vehicle and the accomodation.  I think that the base is about 30 miles from the airport and about 1 hour of driving but it will all depend on traffic no doubt.  Have any moms out there already made this trip?

We are planning on renting a car at the airport and arriving on thurs, going home on sunday (just in case he has liberty for the weekend)

Hi Akeewee!  Have you booked a motel yet? Sounds like you have a plan! Good for you

Hi, Terrie!! The airport is about 45 minutes south of Great Lakes. Do you know what day you're coming out? There seems to be quite a few hotels around the base but I don't know if they shuttle. We live in the Chicago suburbs so will be driving up in the morning. I know the liberty depends on when they're going to their A school and if they have watch or not. If there's any questions you have about the area, let me know! Is she going to Fort Sam, by any chance?? That's where my son is going.

Hi Maltobella~ thank you for getting back to me! Just wanting to do the best options. It is good that you live right there in Chicago!! I live in Maine. So I will be dependent upon a place to lay my head, but most importantly getting to the base to see my daughter at her PIR!! My daughter is in division 297 ship 3. I have heard from her once..she sounded lonesome, but said she is staying positive! sending her letters every day..she said to send lotsa letters and love~From what I have read from responses, there are three different places you can fly into.

I'm not sure where my daughter is going in Texas~she is Hospital corpsman;what about your son?

It would be good to meet you!!

God Bless

Hi there. I haven't booked anything yet. I'm usually highly highly organized and it makes me nervous to not have air travel or accommodation or car booked but my hubby wanted to book this all.... I'm a nervous Nellie! Where do you think you will stay? I want to be as close as possible because we are planning on getting to the gate at opening ( 6:30am ) yikes!!

I'm with you, Akeewee!! I'm a bit nervous as well...I just want to be sure of getting things lined up before getting there! Like if my SR is flying out early Saturday morning...do I check out of the motel then, take my bags, fly out after she leaves...it is the details. Trying to put them together and make a plan; time is ticking away!! I do not like last minute stuff!! I plan on being there at 6:30 as well as one of the sites said it would be a good idea.  My other daughter that lives in Florida is flying in to be there. Let me know what airline you are traveling and where you are staying!

Bless you

Yep, my son's going to be a Corpsman also... so she's going to San Antonio. It sounds like if they're not going to A school at Great Lakes, they more than likely leave Sat morning and I saw someone wrote that they fly out of Midway. Is it cheaper to fly from Maine to Midway or O'Hare? Or maybe even Milwaukee like people said...Milwaukee isn't far from the base at all I think. I'd guess an hour.

Hi Maltobella,

Do you know what the name of the base is?

My oldest daughter flies in from Florida and it is cheaper for her to fly into O'hare~so that is where I will fly into too. We are going to rent a car. I booked a room at the Sleep Inn they said that they shuttle you to the PIR; I do not know if I still need to get a pass? My flight is going to be about 344. round trip. From where I live I have to drive 2 hours to the airport...There is another airport about 3 1/2 hours away that has a non-stop flight for 345. I have not yet booked it; thinking I will take the one closer with one stop flight. I have not flown alot so I always get nervous thinking about getting to my connecting flight. Oh, dear...

I am hoping we can connect...

God bless

Hello there Terrie

All us Moms are going to be champing at the bit to get through those gates to see our boys and girls! Hahaa!  I have told my son that he better be ready for me to not let him go for a long time after we get him (i wont be able to stop hugging him) I get up in the morning and think about him all day and go to sleep thinking of him.

I will let you know where we end up staying for sure.  Im Fiona by the way.  My son is Elliott, he left of Jul 18th, this was 1 month after high school graduation and 2 weeks after his 18th birthday.  Alot in one month.  A school for him is at Goose Creek in South Carolina, he qualified in the DEP for nuke school.

How are you/your son/daughter doing?

God bless you all

Hi Akeewee!

That must have been hard to have your son leave right after he graduated high school!! My daughter is 22; she is going to Texas for Hospital corpsman. My oldest daughter lives in Florida~she is 26. She also is in the medical field. I bet you are very proud of Elliott!

Nice to meet you, Fiona~I have not been on in a while; I am a school teacher and have been preparing for school!! Starts August 27.

God Bless

Terrie

Terrie, do you mean the base in San Antonio? That's called Fort Sam Houston. What day are you both flying in??

My SR is also Hospital Corpsman and going to San Antonio.. We are driving from Kansas to PIR and staying at the Navy Lodge.. Mine is Division 296 and although I havent received a phone call yet, :( I do get letters.. I am really getting excited to see him, 19 days left... Woooo Hoooo
